Best Super Smash Bros. Melee Characters

The Top Ten
1 Fox Fox McCLoud is an anthropomorphic fox who first appeared in Star Fox for the Super NES in 1993, the son of James McCloud who perished during a mission and the leader of the new Star Fox team along with Peppy Hare former member of the original Star Fox team, Falco Lombardi and Slippy Toad as they the battle the evil genius Andross and his forces to keep them from taking over the Lylat System.

Fox falls into a unique archetype of character along with Captain Falcon. Most characters are either fast with weak attacks or slow with strong attacks. Fox is fast with strong attacks. Fox is equipped with an incredibly good recovery, excellent combos, very reliable and strong finishers, and can be completely unstoppable (LITERALLY) with someone who has mastered waveshining.

The reason fox is better than falco is because fox is quicker and can do so much more damage in such little time. Fox can jump further and is faster. Why have stronger attacks if fox can just burst damage you with his blaster then wipe the floor with your face with his ultimate combo's.

There is a reason the best players use Fox. To a master, he is unstoppable. Anyone of you who can't compete at a tournament level, keep your votes to yourselves, because seriously...you really have no idea what Fox can do.

True to his position, Fox is an extremely efficient fighter with fast attacks, excellent comboing and damaging ability, long recovery options, and numerous approaching methods boasting some of the best neutral game options among the entire cast. He has KO options and setups at a wide variety of percentages, and his high falling speed makes him resilient to vertical KOs. His aerial game also includes several low-lag yet effective and powerful moves to complement his ground game, especially when SHFFL'd, and is incredibly effective at approaching and edgeguarding. Fox's main tool in his success, however, is his Reflector (also known as the shine), which is one of the most versatile tools in the game. Aside from its intended purpose, the Reflector activates on frame 1 (making it the fastest move in the game), has set knockback, and can be jump canceled; this allows for shine spike gimps, neutral stance resets, getup option mixups, and even combos when wavedashing is ...more

2 Marth Marth is a fictional character from the Fire Emblem series, developed by Intelligent Systems and owned by Nintendo. He is the protagonist and Lord class character in the first and the third games in the series, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, and Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, as well as their two remakes, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem. Marth debuted in 1990 with the release of Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryū to Hikari no Tsurugi in Japan. He is depicted as a heroic prince, sixteen years of age who is forced to flee his home kingdom of Altea after it is attacked. He then leads a rebellion to regain control of his kingdom and save his sister ...read more.

Marth should be number one for sure. He can beat anyone 1v1 and he is untouchable with his sword. If he hits you into the air you might as well give up because he belongs in the air. (Notice how Marth hits people further in the air than Roy? )

Marth and Roy are no were near the same. You choose which one depending on your fighting style. If you are an airborne player, always jumping into the and can fly with practically any character, Marth is your best bet. He is a deadly fighter with his Up A. He will keep juggling you until you finally go off the screen. He has very good recovery as well so it is very hard to counter Marth.

Roy on the other hand is an on-ground fighter. He does more damage than Marth but he doesn, t do much aerial damage. I suggest using Roy if you don't jump much and rely on your smash attacks to kill your opponents.

Alongside Roy, eventually caused Nintendo to begin releasing the Fire Emblem games internationally; the first internationally released game came two years after Melee.

Marth currently ranks 3rd on the Melee tier list, in the S tier. Marth has many powerful tools at his disposal, including fast overall startup in his attacks, long and disjointed range, large amounts of additional power at the tip of his blade, very potent juggling and combo ability, the longest non-disjointed grab range, and great edge guarding capabilities. Marth also has a multitude of good movement options to approach and pressure with; his dash-dance and wavedash are among the longest in the game, complementing his already-impressive range extremely well. Marth also has many options to KO his opponents and finish combos, such as his down aerial (a very potent spike when sweetspotted, and the closer to the notorious Ken Combo) and forward smash.

On the downside, his ability to punish approaches is ...more

I choose him not only because he's fast, but also because he has long-ranged attacks, making it easy to combo other players.

3 Falco Falco Lombardi is an anthropomorphic bird character from the Star Fox series of video games. He was created by Shigeru Miyamoto and designed by Takaya Imamura. Falco acts as the wingman and friend of title character Fox McCloud for the majority of the series.

There is actually a big difference between falco and fox. They are both really good at combos (obviously) but they do them differently.
Falco is good if you can only do small combo's that end the battle decisively. But Fox is better if you're a pro and can put multiple different combo's to make a string of tactics that will decimate your opponent. Fox's speed makes sure that you don't hit him at all while he destroys you with his epic combo's. But I think that falco is better because he can kill people much faster than fox and is still very fast.

Falco is a very effective fighter when it comes to chain combos. His shine is very powerful if used correctly. If your a player like Westballz and Dr. PeePee, your Falco will be a feared opponent

Falco is ten times better than mew two what are people thinking

4 Captain Falcon Douglas Jay Falcon, known commonly as Captain Falcon, is a playable character in the racing video game series F-Zero.

Talk about a character who's power is ridiculously awesome! Falcon Punch always finishes the job.

He my main in Melee.

5 Roy

I love Roy right here. My boy from the very beginning when Melee was introduced to me. Though I'm not a big Melee player (Meaning I'm not that good in the game), Roy always makes me try and try again. Truly my boy right here and I'm so happy he's in Smash 4 too.

Roy is definitely my boy! I can't tell you how much I love this character. Makes Melee a favorite of mine and definitely always keeps me coming back for more. Had epic moments and sour moments, but overall, Roy will always remain my boy. Smash 4 Roy is also very good and fun too. - Roy Kuchiki

I wish Roy and Mewtwo were in Brawl, even if they were low tier in this game.

Nintendo should've put Roy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and should've removed the Ice Climbers

6 Kirby Kirby is a fictional character and the protagonist of the Kirby series of video games owned by Nintendo and HAL Laboratory. His first game was created in 1992, and the pink puffball has made his way into the hearts of fans of all ages.
7 Sheik

Shiek for me is just too good. Her abilities are through the roof, she is just so fast. She is a one and done character.

Shrek is the best!

8 Jigglypuff Jigglypuff, known in Japan as Purin, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Jigglypuff is actually one of the best characters (the top 5) but only if you have patience and are actually good at the game. Don't use her B moves unless you know what you're doing. (Never use Rollout. NEVER EVER EVER) Her side B is a recovery move and only use sing while falling. (It hits people that are on the edge of platforms) Use rest when you have hit them in the air or evade into them (For rest to work, at least half of your body has to be inside them)

Only use aerial attacks when they are below 100% (Smash attacks and regular A attacks are allowed only at the right moment) Keep strafing in the air as Jigglypuff moves faster in the air than on the ground. Plus you can easily get out of trouble. A small jump and down A works well to trap them and rack up some damage. It also puts them right next to you so you can do a small combo or use rest.

You need patience to use Jigglypuff. She is actually a strong and fast player if used properly, and if you versed a player ...more

Some of the best players in the world use Jigglypuff.

9 Peach Princess Peach is a major character in the Mario Bros. Franchise. She is the lead female of the The Mario franchise. She is usually the character who needs saved in most Mario Games, but also has appeared as a playable character in the Main-Series Mario Games, including Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Run, and even starred in her own game, Super Princess Peach for the Nintendo DS. She has appeared in many spinoff series, too, including Mario and Sonic Olympic Games, the Mario Kart series, the Mario Party series, Mario Sports Games, the Super Smash Bros. Series, and many more.

She was good in melee, but for some reason she wasn't very good in brawl!

Peach is Boss and can wipe everyone else off the floor!

10 Mewtwo Mewtwo is a psychic-type Legendary Pokémon from Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon media franchise. Designed by Ken Sugimori, it made its first appearance in the games Pokémon Red and Blue. It was created by Dr. Fuji using gene splicing in an attempt to clone Mew. In the Pokémon games, it's infamously known as the most powerful Pokémon among all species. Mewtwo is capable of evolving into two forms - Mega Mewtwo X (using Mewtonite X) and Mega Mewtwo Y (using Mewtonite Y)

If there was one character in the Super Smash Bros games that could put a fight out of Meta Knight, it would be him.

Unbeatable

Unstoppable

Amazing

The Contenders
11 Luigi Luigi, originally a palette swap of Mario named Green Mario, is a major character featured in video games and related media released by Nintendo. Created by prominent game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, Luigi is portrayed as the slightly younger, taller fraternal twin brother of Nintendo's unofficial mascot Mario, and appears in many games throughout the Super Mario franchise, often as a sidekick to his brother.

He's my main in Melee because he's just got those good fighting mechanics. He needs to be higher

12 Link Link refers to several different incarnations of the same protagonist of Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda series.

Ultimate link is unbeatable. The remote bombs are such a great upgrade and his Dair spike is really strong.

13 Bowser Bowser is the main antagonist of the Mario Bros. Franchise. From kidnapping Princess Peach to simply destroying a fun game between Mario and Friends in the Mario Party spinoff series, this king of the Koopas has set up a certain hatred towards himself amongst the large cast of Mario Characters. He first appeared in the 1985 popular videogame, Super Mario Bros., in which he was responsible for kidnapping Princess Toadstool (more commonly known as Princess Peach), which was released in Arcades and on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) Videogame System.
14 Pikachu Pikachu (Japanese: ピカチュウ) are a species of Pokémon, fictional creatures that appear in an assortment of video games, animated television shows and movies, trading card games, and comic books licensed by The Pokémon Company, a Japanese corporation. A mascot of the Pokemon franchise, it's considered to be the most iconic character of all Pokemon species, as well as a major character in Japanese pop culture, due to its companionship with Ash Ketchum in the anime series. Pikachu has been featured in movies such as Pokemon Detective Pikachu as well as music videos - most notably Katy Perry's "Electric" in 2021.
15 Ganondorf Ganon (Referred to as Ganondorf in human form) is a fictional character and the central antagonist of Nintendo's Legend of Zelda series. He is a power-hungry Gerudo who possesses the Triforce of Power and aims to conquer Hyrule with the remaining Triforce parts.
16 Ness
17 Dr. Mario Dr. Mario is the persona Mario takes in the Dr. Mario series. Under this identity, Mario dons a lab coat, a head mirror, and a stethoscope around his neck. He first appeared in his titular game, Dr. Mario.
18 Samus Samus Aran is the protagonist of the science fiction action-adventure game series Metroid by Nintendo. A galactic bounty hunter, Samus is usually equipped with her Power Suit, giving her access to weapons she uses to battle her enemies.
19 Ice Climbers

Ice Climbers are THE BEST. They are pretty fast, do insane damage, have a good up-B, and their ice is pretty good. I'm surprised no one on this list noticed that yet.

The Icies are the best, they can wobble, desync and many other amazing stuff. They also have some of the best grab games in the game, there is a reason these guys are in the top tiers

20 Mario Mario, originally named Jumpman, is the main character of the Super Mario Bros. franchise, created by the creative director and video game designer at Nintendo of Japan, Shigeru Miyamoto. Mario has appeared in almost every Mario game, including games in spin-off series as a playable character, with few exceptions including New Super Luigi U, Luigi's Mansion games, Yoshi's Island games, and similar counterparts. He is the most iconic character in video game history and is Nintendo's unofficial mascot. His franchise has grown to be the most successful video game franchise of all time.
21 Young Link

Just because...it's young Link u have to admit he is a a strong opponent if the person knows his moves (not dancing moves) and is skilled enough I mean those fire arrows are op, ten out ten arrows. I know it's a short distance attack but it packs a punch for real and his spinning attack traps the opponent until the attack is done.

22 Mr. Game and Watch Mr. Game & Watch is a 2D generic stick figure-styled silhouette character, created by Nintendo and an amalgamation of the Game & Watch handheld consoles.

His victory theme should have stayed tge way it was from Melee. His Brawl victory theme sucks!

23 Yoshi Yoshi, once romanized as Yossy, is a fictional anthropomorphic dinosaur who appears in video games published by Nintendo. Often appearing as a sidekick and helper to Marion, Yoshi is most known for his appearances in the Yoshi's Island and the Super Mario franchises.
24 Donkey Kong Donkey Kong is an arcade game released by Nintendo in 1981. It is an early example of the platform game genre, as the gameplay focuses on maneuvering the main character across a series of platforms while dodging and jumping over obstacles.
