Mario
Mario, originally named Jumpman, is the main character of the Super Mario Bros. franchise, created by the creative director and video game designer at Nintendo of Japan, Shigeru Miyamoto. Mario has appeared in almost every Mario game, including games in spin-off series as a playable character, with... read more Mario could be considered the main character of the series. He appears in almost all the trailers and reveals, so he is usually considered the most prominent Smash character. His moveset is extremely basic and easy to get used to. This is probably intentional, as Mario is the most iconic character. Since most people know him and would probably want to play as him, Nintendo gave him the least complex moveset possible.
He's very easy to pick up. He doesn't have too many gimmicks, which make him easier to get the hang of.
Cloud
Cloud Strife, more commonly known as simply "Cloud", is a fictional video game character, the main protagonist of Square's video game Final Fantasy VII, which is a role playing game released in 1997. He also is the main protagonist of the high-definition version, as well as many of its sequels and spinoffs... read more Three Sentences. Dash Attack. Up Air. Limit Charge. You now are an advanced Cloud Main.
Cloud has been known to be notoriously simple to use. His character induces rage into the Smash community because he is so needlessly overpowered. Since the game favors an effortless playstyle with Cloud, many players take a liking to him and his ease of use.
Kirby
Kirby is a fictional character and the protagonist of the Kirby series of video games owned by Nintendo and HAL Laboratory. His first game was created in 1992, and the pink puffball has made his way into the hearts of fans of all ages. Kirby is a generally easy character and is very similar to Mario in that they are both the most iconic characters of the Smash series. Kirby games are also especially easy, which is why Kirby gets the number 3 spot on this list.
Sonic
Sonic the Hedgehog, trademarked as Sonic the Hedgehog, is the title character and protagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series released by SEGA.
He has since appeared in numerous spin-off comics, seven television shows, an animated OVA, and a live-action movie trilogy. Sonic is infuriating to play against but fairly easy to use. They probably made him a simple character since he is also iconic along with Mario, and new players may choose him.
I'm pretty good with Sonic. It's helpful that the homing attack automatically goes toward an opponent.
Luigi
Luigi, originally a palette swap of Mario named Green Mario, is a major character featured in video games and related media released by Nintendo. Created by prominent game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, Luigi is portrayed as the slightly younger, taller fraternal twin brother of Nintendo's unofficial mascot... read more Luigi is very similar to Mario, but not similar enough to be an echo fighter nor close enough to be as much of a clone as Dr. Mario is either. Bayonetta
Bayonetta, real name Cereza, is a fictional character and protagonist of the video game Bayonetta and its sequel, developed by PlatinumGames and published by Sega and Nintendo respectively. Bayonetta is known for being very overpowered, and you don't even have to put that much effort in to get that OP. She is fast, slim, and has very powerful attacks, which is what most top tier fighters have. However, Bayonetta here has turned everything up to 11.
King Dedede
King Dedede is a fictional character and the primary antagonist of the Kirby series of video games owned by Nintendo and HAL Laboratory. I had to include a heavyweight somewhere, and who else but Dedede? He has the perfect speed and weight for someone to get used to, and his attacks aren't the most complex things in the world either.
I think he is the easiest heavyweight to learn. He can hover like Kirby, which makes recovering easier. Also, he's got some good moves like his up B. I usually use it as a final move.
Mii Fighters
I'd say the brawler is really easy to learn, the swordfighter is pretty easy but takes some time to get used to, and the gunner is just flat out the worst Smash Bros character of all time.
Not much to say about these guys. They don't have much to them and are just generally easy to use.
Rosalina & Luma
Rosalina, known as Rosetta in Japan, is a major character in the Mario Franchise created by Nintendo. She first appeared in the 2007 Mario Game, Super Mario Galaxy for the Nintendo Wii and later returned for the game's sequel in 2010. Since then, she has been featured in many main-series Mario Games... read more Rosalina & Luma are yet again regarded as annoying, and even though they are probably the 'hardest' characters to use among that group, they are still rather easy to pick up.
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong is an arcade game released by Nintendo in 1981. It is an early example of the platform game genre, as the gameplay focuses on maneuvering the main character across a series of platforms while dodging and jumping over obstacles. Most about DK is the same as Dedede, although the leader of the DK Crew feels a lot less floaty and he does have some hard maneuvers. I still think he is relatively simple, but he is one of the characters on this list that may be a little more challenging for a new player.
