Top 10 Best Super Smash Bros. 64 Characters

The very best playable characters from Super Smash Bros., the revolutionary Nintendo 64 game that was released in 1999 and spawned one of the most successful fighting game franchises of all time.
The Top Ten
1 Kirby Kirby is a fictional character and the protagonist of the Kirby series of video games owned by Nintendo and HAL Laboratory. His first game was created in 1992, and the pink puffball has made his way into the hearts of fans of all ages.

I'm probably biased because I've been playing smash bros for over 10 years and 98% of the time I play with Kirby so I know his moves the best. With that said, I've tried playing with all of the characters and none seem to compare with his speed and attacks for me. My next favourite would be Link or Samus. Fox is another contender too. Kirby will always be #1 though.

Pink, adorable, and awesome. Oh, yes. I put my trust in you Kirby.

Maybe he doesn't have the most powerful attacks but he makes up for it with his jumping. Kirby is definitely a character where you'd have to be a absolute expert or a beginner to appreciate and I consider myself in between. But you should see a friend of mine play with him! Its ownage beyond compare!

Without a doubt, the most deadly of any smash bros. Character. Kirby may be seem weak and useless at first, but put enough practice in to him and I think you will find his strategic moves, flight and speed able to help you combat against any character.

Kirby is great at speed don't ever forget that. I am a big fan of kirby myself and surprise surprise I am very good with him. He is pink and cute and the T.V. show was made the same year that I was born 2002 yup best video games in my book

2 Pikachu Pikachu (Japanese: ピカチュウ) are a species of Pokémon, fictional creatures that appear in an assortment of video games, animated television shows and movies, trading card games, and comic books licensed by The Pokémon Company, a Japanese corporation. A mascot of the Pokemon franchise, it's considered to be the most iconic character of all Pokemon species, as well as a major character in Japanese pop culture, due to its companionship with Ash Ketchum in the anime series. Pikachu has been featured in movies such as Pokemon Detective Pikachu as well as music videos - most notably Katy Perry's "Electric" in 2021.

Incredibly fast aerials with decent knockback and combo-ability, specials great for damaging, shield-pressuring, and spacing, and the only safe recovery in the game make Pikachu the best character in Smash 64.

It also IS the best character, according to tier lists (which are far more accurate than noobs say so).

Pikachu is way better than Kirby. Kirby is so slow. Pikachu is so quick.
He is also way cuter. One time I choose Pikachu at my first time playing and Kirby was there. Kirby is like Jigglypuff except not as slow. Kirby went flying off the map and died. Pikachu should be first.

Pikachu's volt tackle and thunder is by far the best moves I've seen in this game, he's really fast and if he falls he can always use that move he does where he jumps with electric or something and when I use him I can beat master hand in 3 minutes so I always choose him.

Pikachu is a beast if used correctly, mainly due to the fact that it is one of the only characters that can defend its upside. Very well paced and easy to use in almost any situation due to it's well spread out move set.

3 Fox Fox McCLoud is an anthropomorphic fox who first appeared in Star Fox for the Super NES in 1993, the son of James McCloud who perished during a mission and the leader of the new Star Fox team along with Peppy Hare former member of the original Star Fox team, Falco Lombardi and Slippy Toad as they the more.

Fox should be in the top 2 strictly because he IS the fastest character in the game, and also, his power moves are quick and decisive. I've occasionally knocked people out the screen with about 80% health with those various moves

Hundreds of games with various people proved to that throwing was the only sensible up-close combat option. Fox throws just as well or faster then pickachu or kirby. But has considerable better range attack and defense.

Fox is the fastest, and his reflect attack makes him almost unbeatable if used properly. He can jump extremely high and his quick attacks make him the best character.

Fox is the best! With super high jumping and quick attacks, just give him a beam sword and he is unbeatable! I use Fox against my dad, and he uses Mario, so he goes DOWN!

4 Captain Falcon Douglas Jay Falcon, known commonly as Captain Falcon, is a playable character in the racing video game series F-Zero.

He's not my favorite character (I'm a major Link fanboy) but he is definitely the all around best character in the game. He's the fastest character and if done right can continually combo without the opponent being able to counter because he is too quick. His hits are fairly strong, all his smash moves are solid and everyone of his special moves are completely B.A. He also has great striking range (falcon kick and those long dancers legs) and he has a pretty decent jump distance. I understand why people think Kirby is the best but he can and will die at 70%, Falcon will not.

Not only is he a great character, he's the most annoying character to fight against. Listening to that jerk yell "Falcon Punch" and "Falcon Kick" while he's beating your ass around adds insult to injury to your opponents.

Falcon is great! I win all the time with him! I like Link, but I kill him in 30 sec. I won the game in the hardest level with one life with Falcon! Never see any thing like him! Easy to control every one else is history.

Falcon is the best in the game. Great juggling. A great downward smash attack, and a better aerial juggling move. His grab and throw is extremely fast. Beat up a tiny bit, throw off when around 40%, and smash down - rinse and repeat

5 Link Link refers to several different incarnations of the same protagonist of Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda series.

The close-up-with-reach king. If used right, not only can he decimate opponents, he will do it without their consent, in the air, then a smash. Two distinct throwing moves gives him flexibility on the edge. Further, spin and up-A attacks gives him that instant safety net when surrounded by a many foes. Make sure you always use his extra speed though, otherwise, he might be a tad too slow.

Link Can be the master if you know how to use his main attacks. Though he may have a small jump, He is awesome against everyone except pikachu (in my OPINION pikachu is a little overpowered, only noobs use him cause he doesn't even require skill. Now remember this is MY opinion, I also like fox and samus, but to me link will be the best.

Link should be number one! His shield helps a lot when blocking and his sword is really strong! He can't jump high because his equipment is to heavy and he tries to jump his best, link the best! Link number 1

Link is super powerful his hits do massive damage! He can KO kirby or just about anyone once they have 100%. Kirby if you hit him with your forward smash at 80% gets KO. He is great except for his jumping!

6 Mario Mario, originally named Jumpman, is the main character of the Super Mario Bros. franchise, created by the creative director and video game designer at Nintendo of Japan, Shigeru Miyamoto. Mario has appeared in almost every Mario game, including games in spin-off series as a playable character, with few exceptions including New Super Luigi U, Luigi's Mansion games, Yoshi's Island games, and similar counterparts. He is the most iconic character in video game history and is Nintendo's unofficial mascot. His franchise has grown to be the most successful video game franchise of all time.

Are you kidding me! Mario is by far the best. He is the ultimate damage machine and he spam traps you like a beast. He is the best at combos as well if you are really experienced. If you combine his ability to spam and using his overpowered combos then you can keep your foe in one spot the whole game without worrying about him doing any damage back.

He is the ultimate troll and is great for beginners.

Mario is the definition of Super Smash Bros and more importantly Ninetendo. He is the face of the franchise and has insane smash moves and not to mention he is an excellent if not the best jumper in the game. Should be no. 1

Mario's the bomb man. I love him! I have all the games. He is completely, totally awesome. I can't believe he's not top of the list

7 Ness

First I started it out with Kirby and Pikachu cause they are easy to use and they have mighty speed.
After getting more experienced in the game my 2 best are Pikachu and Ness. Pikachu is always a great match with his dangerous shocking attack, my predator is Ness.
He is difficult to use, I know, but if you keep practising with this one you can change his slowness into speed with help of his quick recovering and aerial. If he hits his enemy with his 'self-projectile' attack the damage is huge!
Not to mention his mean, but very effective downwards kick he uses to kick their enemy's to oblivion.

First I started with kirby and pikachu cause getting along with them is easy, what I used because of their mighty speed.
After getting more experienced in the game my best are pikachu and ness. Pikachu stays dangerous with his thunder but for me ness is the predator. If you train with him you can make make him very fast and after getting knocked back he can quickly regain. Not to mention his deadly 'self-projectile attack...

Come on, kirby and pikachu are great for starting out, captain falcon, samus, fox, and dk are great once you get better, but once you master the game you find ness and luigi to be the best. Luigi's up b makes him better than Mario, you can rule the air with his down b, his grab is insane, and his down a smash is second to ness's. Ness has an insane grab launching characters extremely far, his down a smash is the best in the game in my opinion, his up b gets you the farthest in the game and can deal obscene amounts of damage if you launch yourself into someone, and I love the squeal sound from his bat and luigi's up B.

I'm a beast with ness, he has a very powerful spike and he is probably second best to kirby in ability to get back on the edge. I play on an almost daily basis my character of choice is ness but my two friends like kirby and pikachu. We are fairly equal but I usually win with ness. I like to use all of the characters pretty equally. Ness is the best with his spiking ability, quick/powerful grab, strong aerial attacks, bad ass B up, and he is fun to play with.

8 Jigglypuff Jigglypuff, known in Japan as Purin, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Jigglypuff looks weak but truly she is awesome and cool fighter like Kirby and Pikachu, if you know how tu use her. If you practise a lot with her, she is even more powerful then other strong characters, just use combos too! Her Rest rocks!

She can beat any other character in seconds because of her kill combo. Jump in the air and Down A, when you land hit Down B and any foe (Except Donkey Kong but he is useless anyways) will go flying off the screen. If you are really good then there are so many combos that you can do that will make anyone who is versing you scream at Jigglypuff. That annoying taunt.

Why isn't jigglypuff number one? In the melee games he had a legendary scream move

9 Yoshi Yoshi, once romanized as Yossy, is a fictional anthropomorphic dinosaur who appears in video games published by Nintendo. Often appearing as a sidekick and helper to Marion, Yoshi is most known for his appearances in the Yoshi's Island and the Super Mario franchises.

In my opinion, Yoshi's a very underrated character. Like Samus and Link, Yoshi has a slow grab and isn't all too fast, but if used correctly, he can be a very frustrating character for your opponent. Obviously, most people know Yoshi's ground pound is a strong attack, but his power hits and egg toss are pretty deadly as well. When below opponents, Yoshi's flutter kick can actually cause a devastating amount of damage. Speaking of flutter kick, Yoshi's flutter jump can move through just about any attack and goes a fairly long distance, making him a difficult character to knock off the arena. Speaking of knocking off, if you know how to use Yoshi's egg toss well, your opponent, when thrown off the arena, will have a difficult time getting back on because of it. And like any character, if you know how to use his combos correctly, your friends will absolutely hate you when you use Yoshi. Last but not least, Yoshi's egg shield is the strongest of all the characters. Not necessarily ...more

Ya'll don't know what you're talking about. Yoshi is definitely a top tier character. He's played like Kirby, but with fewer vulnerabilities, better damaging moves (he has the best damage move in the game), EGG PROJECTILES!, and the strongest shield. He doesn't suffer from Kirby's low aerial speed or lousy damage moves. Kirby's killer, but Yoshi is right behind him or just above.

I've played him in this game, he's actually not a bad character. He's super underrated, probably the most underrated in the whole game, but his ground attack, if you practice enough is DEADLY. (Notice how I put the emphasis on deadly.) His grab moves, I am a loss for words, it's powerful. He's also a top tier character in this game. Man... Yoshi really doesn't suck in this game.

His ground pound, like Kirby's is very deadly and his flutter kick can do Insane amounts if damage. The egg through can be an amazing way to keep people off the stage and he has the strongest shield. He I done of the heavy weights and can get up to 200% and still be very difficult to kill.

10 Samus Samus Aran is the protagonist of the science fiction action-adventure game series Metroid by Nintendo. A galactic bounty hunter, Samus is usually equipped with her Power Suit, giving her access to weapons she uses to battle her enemies.

Samus is the best. Can go through the air like time goes slow, while throwing to you a giant laser ball

Unbeatable in the hands of anyone.

The best by far in sudden death.

The Contenders
11 Donkey Kong Donkey Kong is an arcade game released by Nintendo in 1981. It is an early example of the platform game genre, as the gameplay focuses on maneuvering the main character across a series of platforms while dodging and jumping over obstacles.

DK is the best of them all along with his trusty companion Didykong. Didy kong fights with his peanut gun, whapping tail and his fast reflexes. Donkey kong has incredible strength and these moves sure do resemble it! They are the ultimate punch which is the one where he circles his fist at amazing speed then there's his headbutt and his ultimate move is the strongest one and I still can't belive he's not up top claiming 1st place! I play as him every time and I always win and the only player that really earned a place in the top 10 is link. The two D. Ks together are truly unstoppable but either way alone or together they'll always lead to success. (and also Mario is getting all the center attention but is a horrible fighter and can't do anything without luigi)

Donkey Kong's throw is unstoppable. You cannot counter it. I have even been effective in defeating a player with a hammer.

Super strong, hard to knock off and not too slow with a decent jump. My character of choice and a well rounded character

12 Luigi Luigi, originally a palette swap of Mario named Green Mario, is a major character featured in video games and related media released by Nintendo. Created by prominent game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, Luigi is portrayed as the slightly younger, taller fraternal twin brother of Nintendo's unofficial mascot Mario, and appears in many games throughout the Super Mario franchise, often as a sidekick to his brother.

He can destroy people if you know how to use him. I am speaking from a 64 point of view (since the title of this is Best Super Smash Brothers 64 Characters) but this seems to actually be about smash bros in general. I haven't played any of the newer games so I can't say how good he is in those.

I don't care if Luigi was a Mario clone, playing as Luigi was so much fun. His specials attacks are so cool, especially his fire jump punch. Luigi rules the world.

Luigi is great for using in battles. Using the Up B combo will do a ton of damage if used correctly. I also found it enjoyable to use side a to counter my opponents attack. I keep this statement for both the N64 version and the ones after.

I don't know what it is about Luigi, even though he is so much like Mario, that makes him the best. That's why you have to beat the evil hand on verry hard to get him
