The Top Ten
1 [USA] P-51D "Mustang" (Fighter Bomber)

Are you kidding? This is the most overrated aircraft ever. All it had going for it was its range.which admiitedly was a great feature and proved invaluable when the Luftwaffe was running out of fuel in 1945. It was also very stable but this meant that it wasn't a natural dogfighter. However, good plane though it was, it was a "Jack of all trades and master of none". There were plenty of other planes that could go faster, outclimb it, outturn it etc. etc. A better MRCA in WW2 is the B ritish Mosquito. This could do evrything the P51 could do.

My all time favourite aeroplane there is just one word I can describe it as and that is awesome

2 [USA] Grumman F6F "Hellcat" (Fighter)
3 [Japan] A6M "Zero" (Fighter)
4 [Germany] Messerchmitt Bf 109 (Fighter)
5 [Germany] Messerschmitt Me-262 (Heavy Fighter)

First operational jet fighter in history. Being more than 100 miles faster than any allies fighter and equipped with 30mm MK 108 machine cannon and R4M air-to-air rockets, it was a revolutionary development, which outclassed any fighter of WWII.

Would have one the war but the engines burned out quickly, not enough experienced pilots with the 262, introduced too late, slow manufacturing, and the Luftwaffe was running out of fuel.

6 [USA] B-29 "Superfortress" (Bomber)
7 [Japan] Ki-10 "Type 95" (Fighter)
8 [USA] B-17 "Flying Fortress" (Bomber)

A bomber that wasn't really a bomber. It was very pretty to look at but its bomb load was pathetically small and the plane was outdated by 1940. Even the Norden bombsight wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

9 [Britain] "Supermarine Spitfire" (Fighter

This is quite simply the best single engined allied fighter of WW2. It was faster than everything else except for the Hawker Tempest and the Sea Fury. It had a tight turn, fast roll rate and an incredible rate of climb (twice that of the P51 which is an incredibly overrated aircraft). People criticise it for its lack of range but it was designed as a point defense fighter. In any case, later models had drop tanks fitted and were used a lot for photo- reconnaissance. A truly great plane.

10 [Britain] "Supermarine Spitfire" (Fighter)
The Contenders
11 [Britain] Supermarine Seafire
