He arrived in the 1983-84 season hoping to bring the Nets a golden era in basketball and he almost did. In that year's playoffs and in the first round of a 16-team playoff format and in game 5 he scored 24 points in a big upset 5-game win series over the defending champion Philadelphia 76ers. He was the 1985 NBA Comeback Player of the year, and then in the 1986 NBA season he was banned from the league and never returned.

He left the San Francisco Warriors in the NBA in the 1960s and it would be many teams and years in the ABA before he finally joins the Nets in the 1970-71 season. His best year as a Net was the 1971-72 season, that season he led the ABA in scoring (31.5 points per game) and once again led the ABA in free throw percentage and the Nets we're back in the playoffs. This time the Nets surprise the basketball world by beating the Kentucky Colonels in 6 games, another great Nets moment.
