Top 10 Worst Sonic Games

I've played most of Sonic's library of games, and although some have been amazing experiences, others have not. So here is my list of the top 10 worst Sonic games, in my opinion.

Also, any games that are rereleases, remakes, or strictly mobile games without any home console releases will not be on the list.

The Top Ten
  1. Sonic Free Riders

This game…where do I start? This game is so atrocious it's the lowest rated Sonic game ever on IMDB. It's even lower than both 06 and Boom combined, which is an achievement in itself. Not only that, this game basically destroyed the Riders series, and we haven't got another one since. The controls, awful. I couldn't even get past the main menu for 5 MINUTES! And once you get past that. The game is completely and utterly unplayable. And everything else is just as bad as well. The story, what story? The story is basically nonexistent. The writing is on the same level, characters are so flanderized, it's like watching a bad Simpsons episode. And the graphics are so basic even for 2010 Sonic. The cutscenes are just flat images of the characters talking. The soundtrack is nothing special, you'll only like the main theme, which barely gets played. So thanks a lot, Free Riders. The Sonic Riders series is done thanks to you.

  2. Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1+2

These 2 are one of the biggest flops in the series and no one talks about it, like this game is so confused with itself, most don't even know if the game is canon or non-canon to the trilogy's timeline. Even looking over that, the game sucks. The graphics look flat out terrible , like this was released in 2010, and it looks so damn ugly. Not helping is this game's awful controls and physics, like the games do not at all resemble the genesis trilogy's original mechanics or charm. But there's one game worse than this…

  3. Sonic and the Secret Rings

Even though I grew up with this game, I can't deny that this game sucks, which is a shame because the storybook series just had so much potential, especially with Secret Rings' story, writing, and art style being one of the best in the whole Sonic franchise, but the frustrating level design and awful motion controls just soiled whatever immersion this game would've have.

  4. Sonic Shuffle

Most of you are thinking why this game is so high on my list and here's why: THIS GAME SUCKS!!! Not only is it just a subpar ripoff of Mario Party, but the game doesn't even try to do that right, from it's unfair AI, to its almost lack of mini games, and overtly long loading times, and the game's biggest problem: it's so boring, it just feels like a slog to get through. You have to wait for every moment in the game to get done. At the very least, the game looks good, but honestly you're better off playing any of the N64 Mario Party games.

  5. Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric

Most would put it at #1, and honestly I wouldn't blame them for doing that. This game got even more slandered than 06 somehow. But yeah, everything to the bad controls to the game-breaking bugs and glitches, and uninspired gameplay, it just ruined it all. But the game's overall problem is it's lack of direction, like there's running segments, oh now there's a combat segment, now it's open world, like pick a style here or do them all right.

I can see why this series got thrown to the wayside once the TV show ended.

  6. Sonic the Hedgehog

We all know it would be here. This game got roasted into bad game infamy, and honestly, though I do agree this game sucks, it's more in a hilariously bad nature, especially with the bugs and glitches. You'll get some laughs at how atrocious the game is. And even then, the soundtrack and story are at least great. It's too bad the rest of the experience was tainted due to Sega being harsh as hell with rushing development for the holidays.

  7. Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood

I'll be very honest when I say this is easily the worst sonic game on the DS. Even with the decent story and graphics trying to grab you in, the inconsistent quality of the soundtrack, to the repetitive gameplay and poor balancing, to its abrupt cliffhanger, you're better off playing any other Sonic games on the DS.

  8. Shadow the Hedgehog

I already know how everyone feels about this game, so I just repeat what everyone else has rightfully criticized,

it's clumsy controls, the polarizing mission progression, to it's nonsensical story and even more cringeworthy writing. This game is a clear example of trying to be something more than what it really is.

  9. Sonic 3D Blast

I personally was conflicted over choosing this or Sonic Labyrinth. Don't get me wrong, Labyrinth isn't good either. But I feel like 3D Blast fails on 2 points, one is that the game is false advertising. The game is NOT 3D at all, it uses 2D and poses it in a way that makes it look 3D. And the other point is that this game is so boring, especially for a genesis title. Sonic saving flickies for hours on end can only be fun for such a short time period. At least with Labyrinth, it was doomed to fail on the Game Gear, and probably no one would play it given the Game Gear's inferior hardware capabilities compared to the Genesis.

  10. Sonic R

Although I partially believe this game isn't as atrocious as people say it is. It's still bad, specially with its flimsy controls and bad level design. The biggest thing that keeps this entry low for me is the soundtrack, and my god is it so fire.
