You're probably confusing this experiment with the discovery of electricity. Electricity was long discovered earlier before this experiment was done. Sir Benjamin only proved that LIGHTNING was a form of electricity. Earlier lightning and electricity were considered as different things, or maybe there were no experimental evidence to prove that they were both one and the same thing. - Kiteretsunu
