Wrong-Wrong; no doubt protesters throughout ages made sure they stood out in a crowd, but as it is used here has zero to do with anything from Britain. The term "redneck" as it is used in the US is totally homegrown, and comes from those pro-union miner protesters, who were pretty rough around the edges. It gradually became a catchall term that became insulting towards anyone who was not perceived to be city-sophisticated.
Actually, a "Redneck" was a pro-union protester. When the coal-miners in West Virginia were trying to organize a union for improved safety and pay for miners, the "pro" forces wore red bandanas around their necks to rallies and speeches, so that everyone could see who was on their side.
