Top 10 Best A Series of Unfortunate Events Characters

A Series of Unfortunate Events is a series of Gothic absurdist children's novels that have been adapted into film and TV. The story follows the lives of three orphans who constantly flee from the murderous Count Olaf, while gradually discovering mysterious conspiracies surrounding a secret society.
The Top Ten
Violet Baudelaire

Olivia, Esmé, and Violet are all my favorites.

I like Violet because she's smart and can invent and fix things. She made that parachute with just a tissue, some rubber bands, and a basket.

I love her because she hates Fiona and because she's smart.

She's a nice young woman with so many wonderful ideas and creativity.

Count Olaf

Count Olaf was, in my opinion, the best-designed villain in fiction. His hair, brow, eyes, and tattooed ankle gave me haunting visions. He was a perfect mix of darkness with humor and is a fantastic villain with a heavy backstory.

In 2004, Jim Carrey played him, which really pissed me off. Perhaps a controversial opinion, but hear me out. Count Olaf rivals Toby Jones' character in Sherlock in his despicably cruel demeanor. He was the most austere, vile, hostile, grim, horrible, disgusting, revolting, disturbing, vomit-inducing, greedy, hungry, foul, evil, villainous wretch in the world. His feud against the Baudelaires is legendarily ridiculous.

If you don't know, Lemony Snicket - Beatrice's first husband before she remarried Bertrand Baudelaire, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny's father - was involved in the killing of Count Olaf's parents as part of the feud between the two sides of V.F.D.: the arsonists and the firemen. Olaf is a murderous thief who makes most people want to kill him.

This is not Jim Carrey. You like Carrey's incredibly stupid and goofy behavior because he's a comedian. Why they then cast comedian Neil Patrick Harris as Olaf in the new Netflix show is beyond me. But I think, so far, NPH is doing a stellar job. I'm actually scared of his Olaf.

I want him to portray the cruelty yet the silliness of Olaf's personas: Stephano, Captain Julio Sham, Shirley, Coach Genghis, Gunther, Detective Dupin, and Matthias. His redemption in The End was perfect and an unforeseen send-off, in my opinion. I hate him, but that's why he's my No. 1.

Sunny Baudelaire

So cute! I just love her so much! And the way she talks in "baby talk" yet everyone can understand her! Love it!

Let's get things straight: everyone loves a smart, viper-loving, rock-hard-food-chomping, adorable little girl. So, Sunny is naturally one of the best characters!

Sunny is adorable! I warn you, her bite is worse than her bark!

Klaus Baudelaire

Love this series. The Quagmires were always my favorite characters, but Klaus was the one I identified with most.

So much good stuff about him. He's compassionate and is afraid of very few things. Also, a very good brother.

I'm so in love with Klaus Baudelaire. I even made a necklace with his image in it.

Dr. Montgomery Montgomery

He's the only character whose death affected me. I actually cried, which is crazy considering the books and TV series weren't focused on character development.

I wish he'd lived longer. He seemed to be the nicest and most caring guardian. He's the family member I wish I had in my life, to be honest.

Monty was by far the best one.

At first, I didn't trust him, but then I realized he was the only guardian who was very smart and willing to let someone dangerous live near him simply to make sure he couldn't hurt the kids.

Kit Snicket

So sad, definitely my favorite character.

Esmé Squalor

Esme's constant outfit changes always make me laugh, and how she only cares about the sugar bowl and starts screaming in joy when they see that it's "supposedly" located at the Gorgonian Grotto. The scene in the Library of Records is one of the best scenes in Season 2, especially how they transformed this "fashion-obsessed" arrogant person into a flat-out scary and evil one.

Honestly, I'm surprised she isn't lower down on this list, since she succeeds where Count Olaf fails.

Esmé is a riot and, in my opinion, the most memorable of the Baudelaire's guardians. She is also the most terrifying, as she has so much power over the general public and is completely insane. She even goes as far as adopting Carmelita and dating Count Olaf.

She is nutty and addicted to being "in." She is an elitist villain done right.

Quigley Quagmire

DUDE, he was dead before the book started. How can you have a crush on him?

I love how the person who plays Quigley, his name's Dylan Kingwell, plays both Quigley and Duncan! He's so cute and is totally my famous crush.

Ah yes, Quigley. He was definitely interesting, and his appearance shocked me.

Olivia Caliban

Olivia Caliban is the absolute best character! Her death was the only one that I felt sad about, and I still do not watch that episode to this day because of it.

Although if they would have thought about it, they could have easily hijacked Count Olaf's car and left for the mountains before morning. I know that it is not supposed to go that way because it would be too big of a change from the books, but it would be a cool twist.

My favorite character. I dressed up like her for Halloween. She should be higher!

Duncan Quagmire

Best character ever. I ship him with Violet!

The Newcomers

? Joplin
The Contenders
Lemony Snicket

I don't really understand him. He's just a very good person, and he's very smart. I just don't understand his full background story.

Lemony Snicket is the invisible man!

I just like him, he's brave and wise.

Larry Your-Waiter

His face and personality were just boring, but it was the type of boring that was funny and interesting.

Justice Strauss

Omigosh, Justice was so kind to the children! She let them work in her backyard, stay at her house, and read in her wonderful library, which helped them figure out terrible Count Olaf's plan. She was just so sweet and allowed the children to stay in her house (Poe does not matter because he is too absentminded) and even offered to take care of them.

She was so kind, caring, and quite smart. She worked as a judge and, in the first books, confirmed that Count Olaf was wrong. Also, she collected all those books, and only a smart person would do that. Justice Strauss should be higher up on the list.

The Hook-Handed Man

In a show that has a protocol saying that "if a character is good, they must either die or be cast to the side within the first two episodes they're in," it's good to see that at least Fernald remains (sort of). In seasons 1 and 2, he is easily the funniest character (maybe next to Sunny), and in season 3, we find out about his interesting backstory working for VFD and attempting to purge the Medusoid Mycelium, only to lose everything and end up working for Olaf.

Of course, protocol says that he must be kicked out of the show right afterward, but he was good while he lasted.

Isadora Quagmire

Love, love, love Isa! She's so kind, caring, loyal, and smart! I totally ship her and Klaus - they make the perfect pair! Go, Isadora! I love her so much that I will name my daughter Isadora! And my son Duncan - he's my personal crush!

Jacquelyn Scieszka

Jacquelyn is a very underrated character, in my opinion. She was very to the point, brave, and an attractive character.

Jacques Snicket

Man, he had the most unfair death in the series. Not only did he suffer a very painful death, but he was wrongfully accused of being Count Olaf, and everyone thought he was a criminal when he died!

Aunt Josephine Anwhistle

She was just so funny when she wanted to have a look in the mirror. Ahh!

Carmelita Spats

BAHAHAHA... This girl was FUNNY! I loved all her songs. They are permanently stuck in my head. Overall, she was the key person in the episodes she was in that made me laugh.

Mr. Arthur Poe

I have a theory that he is evil. Obviously, he gives the kids terrible guardians, but he also asks for evidence to see if Count Olaf is in disguise only in the Reptile Room when Count Olaf has covered up his tattoo. His coughing is probably the result of some VFD affair.

Best character. Very complex and one of the most interesting characters in history, he really stood out in the series. He was also the smartest and most observant character ever - like Sherlock Holmes but ten times the genius.

He's funny because he is so unaware of absolutely everything. Plus, his cough. Need I say more?

Dewey Denouement

Didn't see him much, but with more screen time, he would have been an amazing character!

The Person Who Looks Like Neither a Man nor a Woman

Most people would probably disagree with me, but this character is my favorite!

My favorite Olaf group member, and probably the smartest.

Hector

He was so sweet and kind to the kids. He offered to take them away from Count Olaf forever, and when Violet, Klaus, and Sunny brought Isadora and Duncan along, he was perfectly okay with taking them too. He just has a great heart!

While he was an okay guardian at first, he was willing to get Duncan and Isadora on board.

Mrs. Eleanora Poe

"Wait until the readers of The Daily Punctilio read about this." Literally my favorite line ever.

She is so annoying. Not everything is about The Daily Punctilio.

The Two Powder-Faced Women

Just funny and needed to be in there. I like the story of how their house was burned in a fire, and then they realized that Olaf had something to do with it.

I like that they finish each other's sentences and are in love with Olaf.
