Most Underrated Disney Movies

The Top Ten

1 The Great Mouse Detective

This was one of my favourite Disney films growing up and it irritates me when people assume it is automatically bad just because it was made during Disney's "dark age." Does that mean they would hate the Lion King if it was made during that same era?

This list has become "every movie Disney ever made that's not Frozen". Some of the newer entries deserved their lack of attention. I get that people are tired of "Frozen", but that doesn't mean every single other movie is "underrated".

Most people have never even heard of this movie, which is a shame because this is my favorite Disney movie of all time! (Excluding pixar)
This doesn't deserve to be underrated!
It's definitely the most unpredictable Disney movie, and it has the best villain - 17nobrien

Luckily, it's starting to get more attention. It really deserves it, it's clever, fun, and it's got Vincent Price playing a psychotic rat! - Elric-san

2 The Hunchback of Notre Dame

This movie has the best music, best villain, best villain song, best "I Want" song, and the most powerful themes of the entire Disney animated canon... Dark and complex, but hilarious, entertaining, and touching at the same time.

I LOVE this movie! Why do people say it's overrated? I don't remember seeing billions of toys and products for this movie. I mean, sure, there were SOME items made for this movie, but it was NOTHING compared to the Frozen hype. - BeanBag343

It's a good movie, but I wouldn't say it's underrated. The reason there isn't a lot of merchandise for it is because it's a bit dark for kids to watch. - yuki-blue

Best Disney movie ever, and so underrated... ♥ - TatianaJackson

3 Oliver & Company

So underrated. It is a lot better than that overrated High School Musical.

It's actually really good. It's my second favorite Disney movie and you should check it out! Why Should You Worry? - LpsDisneyTmntFreak

They honestly have the absolute best soundtrack.

Nah this movie is pretty boring still

4 Brother Bear

Why is brother Bear this low? I love this movie! My brothers and I used to watch this movie all the time when we couldn't agree on what to watch. this movie makes my laugh and cry, it is definitely in my top five Disney movies of all time! I am an Alaskan and love how accurate the natives and scenery is. I most of all like the relationship between the three brothers, the love and annoyance, the fighting, and the protection. Have brothers myself, the accurately describes how I act with them. This movie should be number one on the list.

My favorite Disney movie of all time. I love the beautiful animation, really likeable characters, and most importantly the messages of brotherhood and perspective. Plus, the setting rolls it all into a five-star package; it's the only Disney movie that takes place in Canada (a lot of people say it takes place in Alaska but I say it takes place in Canada because the moose have Canadian accents and the transformation song is in the Inuit language) and as someone of Canadian decent, that speaks to me. Such a fantastic movie; the people who refuse to watch this movie cause of the critics have no idea what they're missing out on!

It has one of the worst ratings out of all the Disney films which is an absolute crime. As far as underrated Disney movies go, this should be number one. - BKAllmighty

It's so good I love this movie it gives me the feels to this day and I'm 15 - LionLink

5 Treasure Planet

This movie represents the struggle of not knowing where and what you want to be in life, which is something I think we all go through. When I watched it as a child I thought 'eh it was an okay movie', but as I grew older I rewatched the film a few times and only then was I able to get the real meaning of the film. I was and still am distraught at what my future looks like right now, but Jim and Silver have both taught me that maybe it's okay not to know all the answers. Maybe you just have to follow what you love. Take life by the horns and pursue what you want to pursue, not what anyone else says. So yeah, to me this film is the most underrated movie of all time and it might even be the best Disney movie of all time.

Amazing characters, visuals, atmosphere, and plot

This movie is amazing and deserves better recognition.

Biggest issue with this movie to me is the CG. Sometimes is works very well. Other times it's a random first-person shot for no reason or VERY BAD gold effects/

Also there's Ben, the worst Disney character of all time. (maybe) - LarkwingFlight

6 The Sword in the Stone

This movie is amazing. Enough said. - RockFashionista

Oooo...I had completely forgotten about this one. It should be in the top 5. Merlin is an awesome character, and the imagination put into this film is superb. - Knucklewood

7 The Rescuers Down Under

It may not be good as the original 1977 film, but it's a best underrated movie.

I felt that it was BETTER than the little mermaid or the lion king

Best Disney sequel of all time

8 The Aristocats

My favorite movie of all time! People don't take into consideration the fact that this was the first Disney movie produced without Walt Disney. The songs are great, the characters are great, the voice actors are great, and most of all, the plot is great! I still hum "Everybody Wants to be a Cat". - BeanBag343

Gosh, this was my favourite movie as a kid, hands down! I loved the music, the plot, and the lovable characters, I don't know why it's so underrated!

Why people don't like it I don't no!

good flick

9 The Emperor's New Groove

This animation is the most perfect comedy that Disney has done. Even Aladdin, which is extremely fun, can't make us laugh as much as "The Emperor's New Groove" does. Why this animation is so little remembered? - Palmeiras

One of the funniest movies Disney has ever made

Fantastic movie. But I wouldn't call it underrated - Knucklewood

The comedy in this is gold-plated genius! The acting is terrific (especially Patrick Warburton as Kronk), and the villain, Yzma (voiced by the late-great Eartha Kitt), was a fantastically devious and cunning villain. Should have more appreciation than it has. - stinkyjaden

10 Atlantis: The Lost Empire

This movie had one of the best visual art styles I've ever seen in any 2d animated film. Not to mention that it is very similar to "20,000 leagues under the sea" but with Atlantis as a twist. Pretty amazing!

And nobody can forget the beautiful "Princess Kida" or "Kidagakash". This film, is very similar to some other anime films, which is awesome. Atlantis also had lots of epic action scenes. The people who made this also created a whole civilization, with it's own language, culture, history, and architecture. Very few movies have achieved this, like Lord of the Rings did...

" Atlantis: The Lost Empire" is also the first science - fiction and fantasy Disney film. And one of the few animated Disney films to be rated PG.

The main reason this film was received poorly by critics was because the film was too "violent" for a Disney movie, which is ridiculously biased. If you've never seen this movie and you love Disney, then check it out. It has a wonderful story, great characters, and awesome action. - Mcgillacuddy

Amazing movie

Absolutely my favorite disney movie.

The Contenders

11 The Black Cauldron

This movie is incredibly underrated. It's a bit on the darker side, but it's a very good movie with memorable characters for anyone who watches it. I really want Disney to pick this movie back up and give it the amazing animation it deserves.

I've never seen this movie. But I heard it didn't do too good at the box office, and from what I saw it looked BEAUTIFUL! I have to see this!

This movie has a very unique and surprisingly dark style compared to pretty much any other Disney movie. It's a great movie and I bet you that a lot of people will have no clue what you're talking about it, when you mention it, since they've probably never even heard of it. - Verbindungsfehle

Princess Elionwy really deserves her own Disney movie, doesn't she?

12 Robin Hood

Okay. This movie is the very definition of underrated. Critics HATE it, because it recycled scenes from other Disney movies, and had the lowest ever budget for any Disney movie(1.5 million), but guess what, critics? NO ONE CARES! Robin Hood was hated by critics, but audiences love it. The caricters are some of the best of Disney, and are very likable (and did I mention that Rob's kind of hot) In short, Robin Hood is definitely the most underrated Disney movie

Come on! Robin Hood was a great movie with loveable characters (specially Little John), great songs, great scenes and great villain, Prince John is a very underrated villain!

This movie rules. The songs are great and the characters are all funny, likable and charming. As a kid I loved it and it was among my favorite animated films. I know it reused animation from other Disney films but most films from this era (1970's and 80's) did that all the time. That doesn't make it bad (It's still great animation in context) and I recommend this classic adventure to anyone. Hands down the best Disney film made after Walt's death.

Robin Hood was one of my favourite movies as a child and I finally got it again on dvd for my 17th birthday - WinchesterGirl26

13 The Princess and the Frog

To the person who said this is better than Frozen, isn't every Disney movie except home on the range better than frozen?

This movie is even underrated at being underrated. How is that even possible? - torrenceweaver

This film is so much better than Frozen

Complex plot, black princess that WORKS HARD, everything we could have asked for. Yet Frozen crap is considered better. this is the best disney movie, with hercules as second.

14 The Fox and the Hound

Simple storyline with brilliant characters and emotion. I know many people don't notice this Disney film but it's one of my personal favorites and I really connect to it on an emotional level

15 A Goofy Movie

Nobody ever talks about this movie

I actually grew up with this movie along with the Disney classics. It's cornier than anything, but that's part of it's charm. - Elric-san

Not only the most underrated movie, but the soundtrack was awesome too. What kid that grew up in the 90s didn't want to go to a PowerLine concert?!?!

16 Hercules

Hercules character became my role model as a kid. I wanted to be strong, brave and kind like him. In a way it still is. Inspiring only as it gets. By far most underrated disney movie of all time, considering it should be right next to the greatest: lion king and toy story. No more, no less. Period.

Disney's best villains are the ones that you can't hate. Hades is a hilarious villain, and Meg is sassy and fun.

I really like this movie. It's very funny, has great music, likeable characters and a great villian

In Hercules, the movie contains some of the greatest features.
1) The Muses: Who ever knew that including Gospel Singing to narrate a life of Hercules can make the movie much better.
2) Meg: A character who deserves recognition and should be in the Disney Princess Lineup, despite stabbing Hercules in the back (metaphorically) she became a true hero her self, even when she is in love!
3) Hades: This Disney Villain has tried to kill his brother and nephew, but all of that is forgiven, because the audience loves this villain because of his incredible humour, when he is trying to kill Hercules.
4) The plot: The whole plot of the movie is perfect.
5) Songs: Gospel Truth, Zero to Hero, Go the Distance and I won't say I'm in Love are the fewest of Disney songs in this movie, which are not only underrated but are songs that you would either want to sing to or mouth to.
6) Hercules: Hercules has some of the greatest moments in thi movie, especially when he is trying to either ...more

17 Meet the Robinsons

How is this not in the top ten?

You only hate Meet the Robinson because your mother loves it with a burning passion?! :O - The Ultimate Daredevil, who finds Meet the Robinsons to be mostly decent and thinks The Nostalgia Critic dislikes and likes Meet the Robinsons at the same time

Amazing movie.

Easy for you to say, dude! I am now different than I was a few years ago.

18 The Rescuers

Far and away worse than the sequel (but not terrible). - The Ultimate Daredevil

This is NOT (NOT underrated)

This IS underrated

Far and away better than the sequel. - Knucklewood

19 Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey
20 Wreck-It Ralph

Needs to be in the top ten. This is one of my favorite Disney movies. And it's a shame to see this movie overshadowed by other movies that don't deserve as much praise as this one. (Frozen, I'm looking at you.) This movie has a great plot, touching parts such as Vanellope getting hate when she didn't need it, great humor, and my favorite part is the cameos. Sonic the Hedgehog, Bowser, a mentioning of Mario, and PacMan. Sadly, this movie just didn't meet others interests as much as a movie that I can only consider "Good" (No offense, but I thought Frozen was good. Nothing higher than that.) This movie I could only find merchandise for while it was in theaters. Basically to sum it all up, this movie deserves more popularity than it has now. I see it almost NOWHERE at Disney World on trips, because a new Frozen ride offers 5 hour wait on the first day.

Why in the name of all that is holy is this movie wasting away in near-obscurity while "Rise of the Guardians", which did far less well at the box office, is so very popular and has oh-so-many loyal and vocal fans you'd think it had been the more popular and profitable animated offering of the 2012 holiday season when it was the other way around?

Shame it's only the people who insist Vanellope and Hiro should be romantically involved are the only reason this movie isn't completely forgotten. After all, what Frozen didn t already take away from Wreck It Ralph as far as records, fans, and such, Big Hero 6 finished the job. And the only presence of Wreck it Ralph in Disney World was replaced with a meet and greet for Hiro and Baymax.

This movie should get more attention. It has a phenomenal plot, three dimensional characters, and a surprising villain. Think about it, they didn't make King Candy a good guy and then suddenly he's a villain. No, they kinda gave you subtle hints that he wasn't who he seemed. I really admire that. And I hate when people complain that there wasn't enough video game references. I didn't think that was the point of the movie. People thought this movie was just a cute kids movie with video game references, but we got much much more than we expected to get. I think they should have more Wreck it Ralph merch and more WIR at Disney World instead of all this Frozen crap. Definitely a very underrated movie that deserves much more love than it gets. - SmashPrincess
