Thoughts and Review:
Yes, I am reviewing the MLP movie. I actually did a review on the TV series a while back, but I may have to repeat myself here. I am not a Brony. The only reason I actually decided to watch some of the show and review it was because I was heavily curious on why it became so popular among male viewers, and I actually found my answer. If MLP: FIM was not about a girl's toy, I'm sure the initial hate the show gets would turn around. It's basically one of the few good cartoons that came around in an era of horrible ones. It has good plots, great characters, nice songs, and well-done humor that separates itself from, let's say, Fanboy and Chum Chum bullsh*t.
The same reason goes for the movie; I was curious to see how it would come out. When it first got announced, I was a bit irritated and hesitant because I was worried it would turn out bad. I wanted the movie to succeed. I wanted the Bronies and other fans of the show have a completely good series altogether and shove that sh*t in haters' faces. When I first saw the trailer, though, I had high hopes for it because it looked clean. It looked like it was fun, had a good plot, and I was most impressed with the casting. I thought it was cool that they got Emily Blunt (Sicario), Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy), Michael Pena (End of Watch), Uzo Aruba (Orange is the New Black), and Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan) some nice parts in the film. Overall, though, in my opinion, the MLP movie is probably one of the most basic animated movies I've ever seen in my life. Like, no joke.
This movie was obviously aimed towards the little ones. The story is so simple and so easy to understand without prior knowledge of the TV series that it left me, as an adult, rather unimpressed. There is nothing new or innovative in this film that separates it from other animated films. The thing is, though, even though the film isn't unique, it's still not bad at all. The story is simple but it's not BAD. There aren't any holes or defects in it that kill the overall vibe, and overall, it was quite entertaining to watch. Another thing I actually kind of liked about it is that it wasn't overly girly. This film had a lot of aspects that would intrigue males, as well. It kind of felt like an old-school Disney film, just with a less-exciting plot. The new characters in the film were also not very impressive, but again, they didn't destroy the film. They had just enough personality and charisma to keep things clean. I did like Tempest Shadow, the villain of the film. I thought her more serious and straightforward personality was a breath of fresh air here among characters with much brighter personas. I found the humor in this movie to be really shallow. In fact, this movie had a very low amount of comedy. It had more jumpy and fun scenes in place of comic relief and it was much more focused on its plot, which I actually found interesting.
The animation in the film is also definitely a breath of fresh air because it's f*cking 2D. I want more 2D films in my life right now because I simply miss them. The animation in the film overall looks really good. I liked how the animators used a bit of 3D modeling to make the animation look clean and smooth. The songs in the film are very reminiscent of the ones in the TV show. They are very nursery-rhyme-like, like they belong in a musical that came out in the 1940s. The lyrics of the songs tell more of a story than they are sonically catchy or singable. The song sung by Tempest Shadow (Emily Blunt) was easily the best one among these, pretty much because she killed that chorus line. The ending song sung by Songbird Serenade (Sia) was also really good. I mean it IS Sia. She has a killer voice and I like some of her music. It's pretty dope.
As an animated film, My Little Pony: The Movie won't blow you away, but it won't (or at least it shouldn't) make you cringe.
Overall Score 6.5/10 Above Average:
I honestly didn't find anything special about this movie compared to other animated films, but for what it is, it's actually a rather decent film for kids to enjoy. I think critics completely blew this film out of proportion. Yes, I do believe the movie isn't all that, but it's not TERRIBLE. One critic even compared this to the EMOJI MOVIE, which, if you have the slightest bit of common sense or if you even WATCHED the god damn movie, you would know is not even CLOSE to the quality of that piece of sh*t. Dumb hoe.
Anyways, I'm pretty sure adults will be unimpressed with this film, but kids will definitely like it. The story is simple, the songs are catchy, and there aren't any moments that kill off the vibe. This movie did just enough to make it good for what it was: a kid's film.
Alright, it's over. I think I won't have to talk about My Little Pony here again. I'll be sure to make that review request, TwilightKitsune.

Good review as always. Not an MLP fan myself, but while the movie doesn't seem like the greatest thing in the world, it does seem to at least serve its demographic and fandom well. - visitor
