Top 10 Reasons Why People Buy Terrible Pop and Rap Music

Here are the reasons why most people (not ALL people) buy the horrible, soulless, tasteless Pop and Rap music you hear all over the radio today.
The Top Ten
People like the artist's good looks and not the artist's talent

Good point, because why would someone buy an album to listen to it? That sounds ludicrous. They obviously buy it to stare at the cover. Because why would they like their voice? Insane.

No, but seriously, that's an outrageous statement, and you're literally implying that while listening to music, pop fans only focus on the person, not the voice. That's a pretty simple-minded thing to say.

Honestly, Adele, Sam Smith, and Ed Sheeran are examples of people whose talents are more praised than their looks. But many of today's mainstream celebrities get famous for their looks instead of talent.

According to them, "popular" means "good"

I agree with this. It also means they don't even consider listening to other genres that might actually be very good. Just because not a lot of people listen to them, they think it's not good.

This is a very common misconception. Popular doesn't mean good. Popular means music that the majority of people can understand, and for that reason, it is simple and easy listening.

Popular doesn't mean good. It means it's well received by the general public for whatever reason. Seriously, how is "Shape of You" still playing on the radio?

Most people listen to songs just for the decent beat while the singer is terrible

That's so me. That's the only reason I listen to Lil Wayne. I suggest going on YouTube and checking out the instrumentals for his songs.

The beats are catchy, but there are good pop singers out there. What if you liked Meghan Trainor's beats and the actual singer? GASP!

To be honest, I sometimes do this with songs, but for the most part, no. I also want the singer to at least have a decent voice.

People will listen to whatever you give them just for the heck of it

British critic Mark Kermode wrote in his book that the problem with film is diminished expectations: the bar for quality has been set so low that anything half-decent is tolerable. The same can be said for music. People don't actively seek out good music. They'll just consume whatever subpar pop music is put in front of them.

Most people don't know what's best for them. And by continually giving them the same stuff, they'll never know what's different so they'll just keep asking for the same stuff

The ironic part about this is that I hated all modern pop music for a long time, listening only to rock and alternative. Then one day, I was on YouTube, listening to one of the most emotionally deep and vocally impressive performances ever. I enjoyed it more than most of the music I was currently listening to.

So by now, you have probably figured out I was listening to a Katy Perry performance. No? You thought it was Adele or Christina Aguilera (pardon my spelling)? I had left my sheltered rock music haven and entered the world of pop. So I really did the opposite of what you are suggesting.

They're simple-minded

Now I'm simple-minded just because my favorite song is Never Gonna Give You Up? Even though the rest of my top 10 is all electronic music? That's extreme...

Simple-minded for liking pop music?

Most people think rock and metal are both satanic

Regardless of whether metal and rock are satanic (which they aren't), that image would still give them some kind of edge. This perception is used to turn people away from certain genres because they don't want to admit to liking something the masses turn their noses up at. As a result, they accept what's popular and don't bother seeking out new horizons, which is a shame.

I swear this whole rumor of rock and metal being the devil's music needs to die. I hope it does. I'm surprised it's still going on.

That belief is thankfully dying. Also, I just wanted to say rap is awesome too and has good artists. Most pop artists are mediocre or getting worse, but there are still good ones. They're not as good as rock, but that doesn't mean they're bad. I also enjoy electronic music the most, but I like rock, some rap, and a few pop songs. - DarkBoi-X

They think it's the only good music out there

So rock and metal are bad? How about you tell me how Justin Bieber, One Direction, Nicki Minaj, and other pop singers are considered good?

Society doesn't try anything new. Maybe if they tried a new genre, they'd like it.

I think those morons don't know about Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, or Freddie Mercury.

The media tells them that artists like Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj are the most appropriate artists for kids

Does Justin Bieber actually have a song called "Stupid Hoe"?

Haha! This is the most inappropriate thing the media has EVER said!

Yeah, the media needs to shut up.

Most people will listen to songs about partying, sex, and drugs because they want to do the exact same thing

As much as I love pop music, too many pop songs are inappropriate. Tell me one pop song that doesn't talk about partying or sex.

A lot of people may hate country, but it has many great morals. You know, "Concrete Angel" by Martina McBride and "You're Gonna Miss This" by Darius Rucker - those are the kinds of songs that should be sung by children, not songs like "Anaconda" and "We Can't Stop!"

The music industry has sunk so low that it's just a terrible place to work now. Nobody should be making things that encourage bad behavior in people. I don't know about you, but that's just messed up.

The Newcomers

? It makes them seem tough, blaring on their sweet sound system
? Catchy means "good" to them
The Contenders
People want to be thought of as "cool"

So true. Many people think that conforming to whatever is trending makes them cool so they won't feel outcast. Right now, this mainly applies to mainstream pop and rap.

This isn't just about music, though. It's the same with fashion, TV shows, and technology. We act like materialistic brats just to keep up with trends. I don't keep up with the latest tech devices and haven't followed most of today's movies and music, since many of the recent ones have disappointed me - and I'm cool with that!

They like it

So what? Aren't people allowed to have preferences in music genres? Now I can see why pop music is overhated on this site. You don't have to like it, but you should respect other people's opinions.

Why can't people just respect each other's opinions? Not everyone is going to like the same thing you do, so all you can do is get over it.

Well, this one is the most obvious. If you buy it, then you (usually) like it. It's their opinion.

Most people don't care for other music genres

I really don't care about the genre. I care if it's good. I hate modern-day pop music, but I also dislike that really heavy kind of metal. My ears are just a little too sensitive.

I'm okay with most styles of music, and I could probably find at least one song I like, even if it's extremely heavy metal or constantly overplayed on the radio. I like artists who can sing a wide variety of genres, such as Shakira. She does slow songs, hard rock-type songs, Latin American-styled pop, loud, fast, upbeat songs, calm and relaxing songs, and sometimes even rap!

The point is that you shouldn't hate a music genre. Even if you don't like a particular style of music, stay open to the idea that there could be a song or artist out there you will absolutely love. And don't be afraid to express yourself and what type of music you like. Fitting in can be hard for me on TopTens since everyone seems to be metalheads, but I'm not. It's not often that I go on a music list and haven't heard of half the songs.

That said, I wouldn't mind occasionally listening to a metal song. I wouldn't absolutely run away, leave the room, or turn it off. I'd just listen to it - and who knows, I might really enjoy it!

They have no taste

I like metal, rock, jazz, classical, big band, folk, country, anime soundtracks, game soundtracks, old pop (Michael Jackson), Vocaloid songs, movie soundtracks, and dubstep. There's even the Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow song, Eminem's rap songs, censored rap songs, and rock and roll.

The songs I hate are pop-folk, modern pop, and uncensored rap songs.

The songs relate to them
They only listen to pop radio
They want to chill out and listen to something fun and simple
They want something to dance to
They don't discriminate against genres solely because of stigmas and stereotypes
The songs make them feel good
They don't care about what others think of their music
They like to hear the lyrics as well as the instruments
They need it for a project
