Top Ten Reasons Why Paper Mario the Thousand-Year Door Is Not a Bad Game

The Top Ten

1 Peach's annoying voice has nothing to do with the gameplay

She never made that sound

Since when did not hearing Peach make a game good? Never. - Jasmine21064

True. This game is a great game, for the most part.

People only seem to like her when she's voice dby Leslie Swan, even when she's still kidnapped! She sucks either way so if Super Mario 64 doesn't suck (which it doesn't) then neither does Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door! - HeavyDonkeyKong

Having peach's annoying voice doesn't make it a bad game, either. - HeavyDonkeyKong

2 It is not overrated

Oh my goodness, I love this game. Before haters start yelling, I LOVE Super Paper Mario as well, and I love its story, gameplay, bosses, music, etc. However, it makes me sad when people try to be rebellious and different by trashing this game in favor of Super Paper Mario, since I love both so much, and I don't want to disagree with people who love Super Paper Mario, and that game is underrated. HOWEVER, Paper Mario TTYD is my favorite game of all time! It is very highly rated among people who play these games, but there are many people who don't think about it since they only play the core "main" games. THIS GAME IS FANTASTIC AND EVEN IF IT WAS THE HIGHEST RATED GAME ON THE PLANET IT WOULDN'T BE A BAD THING BECAUSE IT WOULD STILL DESERVE IT! This game is so emotional with a great story, the characters are memorable, the bosses are fun, the music is fantastic, the worlds and locations are unique, and the flaws are minimal! There don't seem to be many legitimate complaints I ...more

What? It IS overrated. - Jasmine21064

It's actually quite overrated to be honest. Yeah it has a hatebase but only a small one of this site - darthvadern

Haha, no. - RadioHead03

3 The dialogue is not confusing

IGN took points off of this and Super Paper Mario literally for the reason "there's too much reading". I mean, come on, it's a Mario game. Sometimes the game's a little dark, but if you think this is the darkest Mario game, you probably haven't played Super Paper Mario or Partners in Time. - Garythesnail

Really the dialogue is easy to read I don't understand how the dialogue could POSSIBLY be confusing! - HeavyDonkeyKong

So thus, we are stupid. But the dialogue is uninteresting like this game and lacks a mix of RPG.

Your saying an RPG game lacks a mix of RPG? Yeah, sure, like, whatever. - HeavyDonkeyKong

4 Peach did not let herself get kidnapped

She was convinced to do so m8.

The haters of this game are idiots
They are just making things up! - Super64Mario

That bull princess of the Mushroom Kingdom (I so prefer Sarasa Land) did not let herself get kidnapped, thanks to that horrible Sir Grodus and the X-Nauts that kidnapped her and later, Princess Peach would not escape.. These characters are a reason why Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is a bad video game. And Super Mario 64 for the N64 is the best video game ever, HeavyDonkeyKong.

5 The story is not stupid

The story is awesome although I prefer the story of Super Paper Mario more - darthvadern

By the way, back in the old days of TheTopTens, why do people hate TTYD so much

I used to do that just because the other RPGs that are older than Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story were better to me. And yes, it was in a truly pathetic manner. Just because these these other Mario RPGs are not as great as the others does not mean that I should not like it. Most Mario RPGs (especially SMRPG) > Modern Mario Sports

6 The title is not stupid

The Thousand Year Door is one of the main concepts of the game! - HeavyDonkeyKong

The title is pherhaps one of the best in mario franchise! - darthvadern

7 The music is good

Top Ten Mario RPG Games with the Greatest Soundtrack

Top 1: Super Paper Mario (15/10).

Top 2: Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (14/10).

Top 3: Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars (13/10).

Top 4: Paper Mario (9/10).

Top 5: Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (7/10).

Top 6: Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (4/10).

Top 7: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (3.5/10).

Top 8: Paper Mario: Sticker Star (3/10).

Top 9: Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (2/10).

The whole Paper Mario series has FANTASTIC music.

This game has a GREAT soundtrack, as do all of the Mario RPG's! I guess it comes down to preference, but there are so many good songs...they chose quality AND quantity!

Not as good as that in all the other Mario RPGs (except for in the last three Mario RPGs released currently).

Bowser's Inside Story had GREAT music! Especially the Dark Bowser Battle! - HeavyDonkeyKong

8 The battle system is good

I disagree with this. The battle system feels clunky and I don't really like how it's made, while it's balanced, I found the battle system in the Mario & Luigi games to be more fun overall - darthvadern

It is a lot like the original Paper Mario's battle system. - HeavyDonkeyKong

Well, Paper Mario has one of the best RPG battle system, so if the thousand year door is like it, how is that a bad thing. - Eclipsmon

9 The characters are good

I didn't care for flurrie or princess peach, but the rest of the playable characters were great! I wouldn't have minded a lack of Penniongton, though. - HeavyDonkeyKong

Well, the Shadow Queen is the worst Nintendo boss, ever!

10 It's on the Gamecube

This has nothing to do with the game though - darthvadern

The N64 is way better.

Anyways, Super Paper Mario is much better and Sticker Star is much worse.

Why are people hating a game for its system? - HeavyDonkeyKong

Were YOU the user who was responsible of thumbing down the comment that says that Paper Mario (the original) is better than PMTTYD and etc?! Or is it some other user without an account who disagrees with it?

A thumbed down comments that have no support to them, not every comment. - HeavyDonkeyKong

The Contenders

11 It is funny

Its humor is stronger than I remember. - The Ultimate Daredevil, a former hater of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

12 The graphics

People hating this for the graphics doesn't make sense, since it was made in 2004. Sure, the graphics weren't THAT great, but graphics in general don't make or break a game. Everyone hating this game all seem to like the N64 so much, and those graphics were worse, despite having on par quality games. Sure, this game isn't that much of an IMPROVEMENT, but that doesn't mean BAD. There's a difference, as the graphics were just Paper Mario 64 but a bit better since it is newer. And also, think about the rest of the game, give it a chance. The Paper Mario series was our only chance for actual originality and amazingness outside of normal Mario, and now even that is being taken away with the newest Paper Mario games (starting with Sticker Star-I don't HATE it but I do hate what it did to the series as a whole as now that is what Paper Mario is to Nintendo) and now the previous games are all we have left. And if you're not going to appreciate an actually quality game for something as trivial ...more

I love the graphics - darthvadern

This I actually disagree with because ei isn't much of an improvement from the original. - HeavyDonkeyKong

Me too, HeavyDonkeyKong. The graphics gave me an eyesore.

13 It can be fun and interesting sometimes

Sometimes? This game always changes things up and keeps things interesting! If you don't like it, that's fine, but give it a chance and recognize that it does new things and has incredible concepts in terms of gameplay, story, and chapter concepts!

Aside from a little too much backtracking and an overuse of lengthy texts, this game is amazoing! - HeavyDonkeyKong

Indeed it can be.
The thousand year door 9.75/10
Paper Mario 9.75/10
Super Paper Mario 9.0/10
Sticker Star 6.0/10 - HeavyDonkeyKong

No, Super Paper Mario will forever be the most interesting Paper Mario at this rate.

14 Princess Peach had no way to escape

She really didn't. She would have been caught without TECH's help, and TECH wasn't even willing to help her at fist! - HeavyDonkeyKong

She was on the MOON. She wasn't able to escape!

15 It's very dark
16 Rogueport is underrated

Rogueport was quite an interesting hub world with nice music. However I feel like I enjoyed Flipside slightly more because of better music - darthvadern

Rogueport is overrated and Princess Peach forced Mario to go there. Imagine if she did that again in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team.

Oh, And let's not forget there was a crime scene in the Japanese version with a chalk outline of a Toad with dried blood around it. it scared me that when I was replaying Sticker Star, I thought I saw the same thing happen to Kersti in the alleyway between the 2 Houses. But it was only a dream.

This may be becauuse this was my first true rpg, but rogueport's theme is extremely nostalgic for me! Also, I don't see anything racist or industrial revolution about it, I don't understand why you're saying that...
My only real complaint about rogueport is that the sidequests all seemed to simple. If Nintendo makes another paper Mario like the first two (which I would love, Paper Mario and Paper Mario the thousand year door ar emy favorite Mario rpgs ever) then I hope they would make better sidequests. - HeavyDonkeyKong

17 Princess Peach is not annoying

She's not that bad, and even if she was, it would in no way get in the way of the quality of the actual game. Hate the game if you hate it, just at least have a legitimate reason that actually significantly affects your enjoyment of it.

All you Peach haters just stop hating Peach so much!

How so?! Rosalina has a much less annoying voice and attributes...

18 The characters have a lot of depth
19 The characters are heavily skillful
20 It has the feel of a Mario RPG that is older than Sticker Star
