Anime Characters With a Tragic Pastegnomac
The Top Ten
Naruto ends up the Nine Tailed Fox Spirit sealed inside him at birth the spirit that nearly destroyed the whole village years earlier, because of his secret he is ostracized by everyone, with no parents or friends and everyone avoiding him he constantly acts out not because he means any harm but because he desperately want's everyone to notice him. - egnomac
ITACHI should have been no. 1 lol
Saddest past ever...
Where is Alphons? How is Ed up here and not Al? Al’s soul was transmuted into a suit of armor, not able to use any of the five senses! Al had worst!
Along with Alphonse their father leaves and their mother dies shortly after they attempt to bring her back using Alchemy which ends in disaster Ed only loses his leg while Al loses his whole body Ed than sacrifices his own arm to bond Al's body to a suit of armor if that wasn't painful enough he undergoes surgery for automail and becomes a state Alchemist. - egnomac
Okay but how is alphonse not up here yet edward is? that literally makes no sense.
Naruto, Itachi, Edward is nothing compared to Guts.
Can't even begin to describe how much this badass has gone through, easily the most tragic character in anime, maybe even in all of media itself.
Guts is backstory is way more tragic than the character above him if you don't believe me there is some people here that give you a detailed information about guts past compare them to those above
Yep, everyone else are pussies compared to Guts.V 9 Comments
He witnessed the tragic death of his parents in a fire. And then he was cursed :(
Was also caught by a cult and sacrificed
I feel so bad for him
on a side note I called Ciel a her at first
He was born as the second son, always in the shadows, he could never play outside because he was the more sickly twin. Eventually, his parents and all the servants were brutally murdered and their manor was set ablaze. Him and his brother were kidnapped and sold into slavery to a sadistic cult who starved, beat, raped, and experimented on them. It came to the time where they then ripped them apart and stabbed the older twin on an altar, the real Ciel Phantomhive, right in front of the younger brother who then accidentally summoned a demon and formed a contract, digging the heirloom ring out of his brother's guts since he had swallowed it repeatedly to keep it safe from the cult that took them. He took his older brother's identity and returned back, put him as number one you cowards.V 3 Comments
If there is talk about character with tragic past. Itachi should be number 1 because he killed his own clan and parents with his own hand for the sake of the village and hated by all people in the shinobi world. Whats more tragic than that.
Itachi had to kill his own family, treated like a villain and is killed by his own brother and still smiles in the end
He was forced to slaughter his entire family and clan, then branded as a criminal and has to live as a criminal for the rest of this life.
If anything can beat a ten year old little boy being forced to murder his entire family, tell me.V 5 Comments
Gaara has a worse past than Naruto, after he finally got his village and some other people like Naruto to accepted him he was basically killed! I mean what the hell Masashi Kishimoto!
Ok, so there's Naruto, Nagato, Itachi..But no GAARA?! He suffered WAY more than any of them! He was rejected by all of his villagers and unlike Naruto, didn't have Iruka, or Kakashi, or ANYONE! Even his own siblings were scared of him.No to mention his only "family" his aunt, tried to kill him.At her own will! That's... come on, people, show some empathy! - ilar9118
What? He suffered more than naruto!
He was called "monster" because he couldn't control sand, he can't sleep because shukaku can possess him when he sleeps, his father wanted to kill him, and then his uncle (the only person who really loved him) tried to kill him and makes him belive he hates him.
Worse past than naruto's.
Kaneki's past is very tragic. Being abused and manipulated from the age of 4; which led him to believe that if he was hurt, he deserved it. Having to delude himself so that he thought his mum loved him. Being neglected after his mum died. Then he became a ghoul and was TORTURED! He was also stabbed in the brain and given amnesia. During this time, he was tormented by his past self non stop (this was a dream to him). Getting his skull split didn't help and watching the only man he ever called a father commit suicide also didn't help.
But the worst thing he's been through, worse than all of that, was being in a bad adaptation.
Glad he's in the top ten (8 currently). But I think he should be higher. Top 5 in my opinion. But I'm glad he's here.
What happened to him was so tragic and unfortunate. If only he hadn't fallen for Rize. This guy has the most tragic past to me, right before Kiritsugu Emiya. For those of you that don't know the anime or the manga, Ken Kaneki was a regular human boy whose father had died while he was still an infant and his mother had died when he was in elementary school. He loved books and reading and was extremely lonely and had one friend growing up. One day when he was nineteen, he took an interest in a girl named Rize that he met at a coffee shop called Anteiku. They found out they both liked the same others and went out on a date. After the date, she insisted he walk her home because she claims to live near the area where all of the ghoul-attacks have been happening. A ghoul is a human-like species that can only drink coffee and eat humans. They are also physically stronger than humans. Rize pulls him into an alley and attempts to eat him, because she is the binge-eating ghoul that has been all ...more
He lost his Dad when he was very young and had an abusive mother who died when he was around ten. He was then taken in by his abusive aunt and changed his memory to think he had a nice mum. Of course there was the whole Rize thing which started a new life of tragedy. There was his torture. He was also stabbed in the brain by Arima twice to become Haise. That was a dream to him. But it wasn't in my opinion. Haise was haunted by Kaneki and was even hurt by him. Then he got his skull split and remembered the truth about his mum. He saw the only person he saw as a father slit his own throat in front of him. Please don't even get me started on dragon.V 6 Comments
His parents and little brother died at a young age. He tried to find meaning in the word love but when he loves people die his curse is the most saddest curse I have ever seen when he loves life dies around him tragic.
He wants to die and was considered the most evilest wizard alive when he is really just a good soul...
He should be up there with edward elric...
Cries every time he sees natsuV 1 Comment
Robert's childhood was just too painful...
Was hated by everyone just because he was a celestial...
His only friends betrayed him...
His carer lied about taking care of him just to get money...

Robin had it way worse than her!
Pfff many One Piece characters had it way worse than her.
Come on, she was rescued and raised by a loving person named Belle-mere for years and grew up alongside her foster sister, Nojiko. But it wouldn't last for long because large Fishmen came to the island where she lived and took over the whole thing. They asked for money but Belle-mere didn't have any because she spent it all to make Nami's favorite meal. So, she asked them to spare her two daughters lives.
For eight years, she worked with the Arlong Pirates to buy back her village from the cruel Fishmen. Only to have them lying to her and steal all the money away from her. Yeah, that's pretty messed up!
Born in the Island of Ohara, she was hated by its residents and bullied by the children, her only safe haven was a library and those who attended it. Later on however even that tiny bit of happiness was taken from her, all of her friends and her newly found mother killed.
Then she had a hefty bounty set on her in a very early age, she couldn't trust anyone, even those who showed her kindness, because everyone eventually betrayed her, even pirates. For the longest time all she could do was find temporary shelter and sleep with one eye open to make a quick get away.
Throughout it all though she at least had a dream to strive for, and eventually joined Crocodile in search of her goal.
Her entire life she had to deal with abuse, and mistrust.
He was taken from his father by Freiza right before he kills his father and all the other saiyans on planet Vegeta. - egnomac
He wasn't taken from his father, he was working on a distant planet at the moment. - Goku02
How does she not have the saddest past?! Her parents were killed, she was in slavery for most of her childhood, and she was abused and lost her eye! HER EYE. She got pushed off a cliff, and beaten by her most closest friend. This is insane
Under the harsh, abusive training of his father(Endeavor), young Todoroki vomited and cried repeatedly. When his mother would defend him, Endeavor would hit her in front of Shouto. Once, His mom no longer had the mental stability to raise her son. After seeing Shoto's left side which reminded her of Endeavor, she snapped and threw boiling water at him, leaving a scar over his left eye. - FuMarie
She's basically a grown woman trapped in a child's body, years ago she ended up in a stand still just like Kei for 6 long years. - egnomac
She loses her parents and her legs after an accident and just completely broke down until Mr. Dominic out of kindness of his heart outfits her auto-mail for her legs allowing her to get back on her feet once again, she becomes grateful for his generosity that she turns to stealing to pay him back for the auto-mail until she meets Winry who sets her strait. - ZZDOORAL
Why is he so low? First, he was rejected by his father, bullied by his brothers, lost his mother and was even imprisoned. Then was stuck in the middle of the ocean and starved for months. - smill
His past is so sad, his father and brothers are the worst!
Not to mention, as he finally got himself a new family and friends, people from his past come back to haunt him and hurt his new family, like takasugi, and utsuro. He was just about recovering from shoyou's death when he was forced to turn against the now 'alive' shouyou. He is fiercely protective if his family and is willing to die for them because he had lost everything once before.
Why is he so low?!
His past is always make me cry, and probably the most tragic, if you see the whole series
(H U G E S P O I L E R)
An orphan > Corpse eating demon > Founded by Shouyou > Normal student > Lost his precious teacher (Father Figure) Shouyou > Starting Joui war > Have to choose between his own comrades (Takasugi and Katsura) or his teacher > Have to Execute his own teacher Shouyou > All his joui war comrades die > Got separated with all of Joui4 > get tortured for saving a little girl (Asaemon) > Almost die and founded by Otose > Now in Yorozuya with his Kids (Shinpachi and Kagura)
Really.. his past is really tough, I can't imagine someone's dork (Comedian terorist) like gintoki Have such a Unbelivable Tragic past, I can feel his pain somehow :'(
There's some pretty dark pasts in anime, but I can confidently say that Gintoki has one of the darkest:
(SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER!) He was an orphan born in the war, looting corpses and killing to survive, to a point of being called a "Corpse-eating demon".
During one of his searches, whilst eating a riceball stolen from a corpse in a deserted battlefield, he was found by Yoshida Shouyou, who commented that Gintoki was a "cute demon." Gintoki drew a sword he had stolen off another dead body in self-defense. However, Shouyou told him that a sword used for self-defense, while fearing others, should be thrown away. He entrusted his sword to Gintoki, saying that he could follow him if he wanted to learn how to use a sword. Gintoki agreed and later became his student. Along with Katsura Kotarou and Takasugi Shinsuke, he studied swordplay under the teachings of Shouyou, and Gintoki grew ever-stronger, slowly beginning to learn to trust others.
His and Zeref's pasts are the most tragic ones in Fairy Tail. - Goku02
His sister commits suicide which caused him to go into a stand still which cost 3 years of his life, after waking up 3 years later his friends abandoned him and ran away to start anew life elsewhere.
After the death of Teresa her mother figure, Clare had the organisation transplant Teresa's flesh and blood into her turning her into Yuma hybrid, she then joined the organisation as a Claymore in order for her to avenge the death of Teresa by eliminating Priscilla. Basically her life was full of hardships and comrades keep dying around her, but she keeps moving forward in hopes to finding peace.
He has one of the saddest pasts I have ever come across. I cried when asako died after she was almost like a mother to him
He just never got a brake first he was neglected and treated like a waste of space then his sister died leading to hike being abused eventually leading to him killing his dad after being forced to watch him rape his mom before she hung herself leaving him alone until he was adopted by a man who sent him to a terrorist trading camp where he was drugged and beaten by his best friend who would die shortly after and he became an assassin for the man who adopted him who dressed him up as his sister a molested him multiple. Then when rescued he eventually is forced to join the army to fight in a bloody war where he almost went insane before becoming an assassin again to take the place of the woman who rescued him as she was dying from a wound she got years ago from the man who adopted yuuji
When he was little he was compared to his sister and got treated very harshly. Then his sister sometimes harassed him when they were very little. Then his sister died in a very bad accident, which left the whole family insane. There father turned to alcohol and abused him and his mom regularly and saw her getting harassed. Then him and his mom moved out. Then they were very poor and barely had enough money to make it through and his mom was always to busy for him. Then there dad found where they were again and preceded to rape his mom. His snaped and killed his dad. Then his mom killed herself and he witnessed her dead body. Then one of there dad's friends took him in and sent him to a camp were he excelled and other kids picked on him for that and he got beaten up. Then one day he met a girl who was his only friend there. Then during the exam to pass this fighting camp they had to fight eachother. This reminded him of his mother and father and he freaked out and gave up. Then he got ...more
His complete childhood was messed up. He was overshadowed by his overachieving and genius sister, neglected by both of his parents and shunned by his relatives. At very early age he was even sexually harassed by his sister. He even thought of her as a kind of god, for how much she manipulated him. After his sister died, his father turned violent towards him and their mother. After Yuuji and his mother escaped for the second time only to be found by his father yet again, he witnessed his mother being raped (by his father) and beaten up, while getting beaten up as well. He killed his own father in rage, but shortly after his mother committed suicide.
But there's MORE:
He was adopted by a terrorist, who made him cross-dress as Yuuji's sister. The terrorist sexually harassed him, sent him to his own school for training terrorist. In that school, Yuuji was drugged, beaten up, stabbed and everything that comes with that. He was even forced to fight the only person he considered as a ...more
Well, he watched his parents get murdered by a demon, watched his guardian die, got abandoned by his 'friend',met same friend again, had his guardian's daughter die, and then had his father die in his arms. I MEAN... - RebeccaDarking
How is Gray's past considered happier than Natsu's? This list is messed up. - Goku02
Natsu never knew who his parents were, he ends up losing his father only to see him die before his eyes, he fights Zeref and finds out that he's a demon, that he died 400 years ago along with his parents, and that Zeref is his brother. Pretty screwed up, right?
What? This guy had one of the happiest childhood among Fairy Tail characters. Zeref's, Jellal's, Erza's, Gray's, Ultear's, Mirajane's, heck even LUCY's past was sadder than his. - Goku02
Because of his bad luck everyone on earth avoided him even his own family members had a hard time dealing with his misfortune they friends he manged to make were Kai, Kiriko and Tenchi it wan't until he met Amane and joined the GXP that things got a little bit better for him. - egnomac
Now no one mentioned this his parents and brothers and sisters die of famine, tag along with a slaver and slaves who care for him to watch them die than get save by his master and than run away to fight in the revolution only to become a manslayer and than get blind to kill his first wife
He grew up on a small island. His dad was a scientist doing experiments on flowers to supposedly make them everlasting. His best friend Shirley was his dad's intern. She wanted to prove to his dad that his experiments exceeded. So she drank a substance he created. But it turned her into some sort of vampire, for his dad was actually trying to see if this breed of vampires could survive without the bloodlust. So Kiritsugu found Shirley in an alley eating live chickens. She asked him to kill her using a knife she gave him, but he couldn't do it. So she got away. She eventually started feeding on humans and turning them into the monster she was. Eventually the island was infested with these monsters left and right. Kiritsugu had to murder his father, this was all when he was a child, to stop him from researching this topic further. An independent assassin took him in and taught him everything she knew, making him an assassin. They worked together for years and had a close bond. This went ...more
He was once a boy who lived on a small island who dreamed of being a hero of justice who could save everyone. However, one tragic event on the island would change his whole life. And with it, he would have to abandon and sacrifice many of those he loved as he realized that saving one person means sacrificing another. - ModernSpongeBobSucks
(SPOILER)His past is awful. Years before the start of the story, him and his lover was killed by an akuma, and because exorcists are rare, scientists transplanted his brain into another body along with his lover, who became Alma. Having to go through painful synchronization tests and his friend going berserk and killing the people in the Asian base, thus killing Alma, no wonder he is so sullen and cold. Heck, even ROAD was horrified when she saw his past
Just read the manga, and you'll understand
Seeing his past through Wisely's power counts as MIND RAPE. It's that terrible
If the entirety of episode 13, "The Beast and the Prince", doesn't tell you that Zero Two's childhood was tragic, then I don't know what else will. Seriously, the entire episode was just one huge Tear Jerker for me. Seeing poor Zero Two being treated as none other than a test subject and a beast while being subjected to unethical and cruel experiments as a child was just heartbreaking. Just take a look at the list of crap she had to go through in her childhood. Kept in a dark and unsanitary room with a picture book as her only source of happiness? Check. Being strapped to a lab table and having a hole burned in her hand along with other painful experiments? Check. An adult actually trying to TAKE away the very picture book that kept Zero Two happy? Check. Things would only get better for her when our hero Hiro managed to break her out of her misery and the two were able to bond together in the short time they had. Which only leads to the worst thing to top off Zero Two's tragic ...more - ModernSpongeBobSucks
When he's first introduced he's an unlikable jerk who's mean to everyone and runs the school but later we find out the reason he act the way he does is because his mother dies giving birth to him and his sister blames him for her death. - ZZDOORAL

Teito's father was sliced in front of him at a young age and he was brought up as a battle sklave/slave. After escaping, his best friend was killed in front of him making Teito want to storm into the Barsburg Empire to kill the one who killed his best friend. But some people stopped him and brought Teito to the place where his (controlled) best friend attacked him, he saw that his best friend wished him to live on even though they swore to die together.
I can't believe no-one thought of this guy yet!
His parents were killed when he was a child and he wandered the village with a dog named Chibi. He used to beg for food until one day he collapsed because of starvation. He then was found by a orphaned girl called Konan and she took him to her hideout where she lived with another orphan named Yahiko. Yahiko was reluctant to take him in since it would mean another mouth to feed but but reconsidered after having Nagato hang. around due to both boys sharing the dream of a world without suffering. The three then began to search for supplies, often stealing them to survive.
One day, Chibi was killed in a crossfire in a man named Hanzo's fight with several shinobi including the Sannin (Jiraiya, Orochimaru and Tsunade) with Nagato and the other orphans later mourning the dog's death. As the war was nearing its conclusion, the three orphans encountered the Sannin themselves. Although Orochimaru intended to kill the children to put ...more
His parents were killed his best friend was killed and he end up killing many people's but after knowing that he is doing wrong he sacrificed himself so that many people can come back to life he had such a dark past he should be in top 5
His mother was raped and gave birth to Yakumo who always reminded her of his father. When she finally had a happy life, her boyfriend was killed by Yakumos father who also told her lies about Yakumos future: He tells her that little Yakumo has the evil genes of his father. As a result Yakumos mother tries to strangle her own son, and, when a policemen stopped her, ran away.
Yakumo was raised by his uncle, believing it's his fate to bring nothing to others but pain. He also inherited from his father a red left eye which can see ghosts, something that he can't tell anyone.
When he is a student and finally meets someone he like, his father - a ghost by now, but still able to do evil things to Yakumo - tries many times to kill her and other people Yakumo really cares about in order to "bring Yakumo into darkness and break him" so that he can use Yakumos body (and murder Yakumos soul).
So, you can say in his whole life he was rejected by everyone he truly ...more
