Top 10 Ways South Park is Better Than Family Guy

The Top Ten
1 South Park Gets Dark Humor Right

Family Guy is a great animated show in terms of its strides in production, designs, musical numbers, etc. It's an all-arounder. However, South Park is a better TV show because, in my view, it is the only show on television that truly goes there. There are no limits. If they want to make a joke about terrorism, incest, celebrity scandals, or even suicide, they will do it. There is no filter. While we may not always like it, the fact that a show has the guts to unabashedly call out modern culture and politics, and make fun of it - sometimes lightheartedly, sometimes critically - is significant. Above all, it gets people talking. Whether the reaction is shock, disgust, or serious conversation about what is wrong with the world today, it inspires something in its viewers. Family Guy is entertainment, but South Park sparks discussion.

2 Family Guy Tries Too Hard to Be Funny

At first, I thought I was wrong for liking South Park better, but well, turns out I'm really not! South Park is witty, fearless, and made with passion and love. It still delivers amazing episodes and jokes after almost 30 years!

Family Guy's earlier seasons were amazing, but then it turned into a dead show that even Seth MacFarlane wants to be cancelled!

Agreed, especially the stupid Meg-hating gag. I feel so sorry for Meg that she has to deal with bullying at home and at school, when she is literally one of the ONLY characters in Family Guy that I like.

Family Guy is probably one of the most unfunny and trashy shows I've ever seen.

3 South Park Has Better Characters

Exactly! The characters in South Park are far more likable than the Family Guy characters. The characters in Family Guy are just so unlikable. Here's my take on the main South Park characters:

Stan is caring, kind, and brave. He's a little shy because he often throws up in front of his girlfriend, Wendy, and has a hard time speaking in front of crowds. He's also sensitive and has a soft spot for animals.

Kyle is short-tempered, Jewish, athletic, and intelligent.

Cartman is mean and vicious but still likable.

And Kenny is the knowledgeable sweetheart.

4 South Park's Catchphrases are Funnier

South Park has unforgettable quotes like, "Oh my god! They killed Kenny! You bastards!", "Respect my authoritah!", and "Okay, that does it! Screw you guys, I'm going home!"

All Family Guy has is unmemorable quotes like, "Giggity giggity goo!" and "Shut up, Meg!"

Oh my God! They killed Kenny! You bastards! is funnier than giggity giggity goo.

Oh my God! They killed Kenny! You bastards!

5 South Park is Funnier

Unlike that Peter Griffin guy, Randy Marsh is the personification of irony, satire, and silliness.

South Park is funnier, but I still don't find Family Guy quite funny.

Family Guy mostly relies on Gen Z humor. South Park uses satire, which is very different.

6 South Park Doesn't Have Stupid Cutaway Gags

Exactly! Family Guy cutaways are stupid, completely random, and have nothing to do with the episode's plot.

Yup. I'm tired of all the stupid cutaways that have nothing to do with the story.

The cutaways may have been fine at first, but the show came to abuse them.

7 Peter Griffin is Way Too Dumb

While Peter's stupidity adds to his humor, very few characters in South Park are outright dumb. Many of them do stupid things, but they also have traits that show intelligence. For example, Cartman is terrible in school and easily fooled, but he excels at manipulation and has plenty of evil schemes that display a certain cleverness. The way other characters react to genuinely dumb characters, like Towelie, is also funny. On the other hand, Peter's stupidity is emphasized to the point where it's his only defining trait. This wouldn't be as much of a problem if he were a side character, but as the main character, seeing his stupidity repeatedly can become annoying over time.

8 South Park is Clever, Family Guy is Not

South Park has jokes that anybody who isn't completely uptight can laugh at, because even though the show makes fun of everything, the jokes relate to real life and tend to have messages.

Family Guy also has things that can be considered comical, but there is no actual structure or basis to the jokes. It's just random stuff to get a laugh or two.

South Park uses clever jokes for satire, and they always relate to the episode. Family Guy's jokes just come out of nowhere and have nothing to do with the episode.

9 South Park Has Better Animation

Agreed! When I see Family Guy's animation, it makes me feel better about my own art (even though my art is meh, everyone says it's great). Family Guy's animation is ugly as hell! At least South Park has creative animation, while Family Guy's is just weird and ugly.

At least South Park is trying to make an effort. Family Guy can go whine elsewhere.

The entire animation fits the theme of the show. It looks like a really good elementary school project, and the smaller things in South Park (like objects) are very well animated. Combined together, it turns into great animation.

10 Family Guy's Jokes are Not Timed as Well as South Park's

Family Guy jokes go on for a painfully long time. Men grunting with newspapers for 3 minutes? Really? South Park is better.

You do have a point with this. I like Family Guy, but you do have a point.

The Contenders
11 Family Guy is Random, South Park Isn't
12 Family Guy is Mostly Shock Value, While South Park is More Satire
13 Stan and Kyle is the Best Friendship on Any Adult Cartoon

This is why I ship Style (Stan/Kyle). Stan and Kyle are a lovely pair, in my opinion, because they are the closest friends of the four boys and have similar personalities. They do have their fights and disagreements, but they almost always reconcile with each other.

Stan is sensitive but brave and caring, while Kyle is short-tempered but also intelligent and athletic.

Stan and Kyle have a true friendship.

14 South Park Has a Great Plot with a Mix of Humor About Today's Society
15 South Park Has Story
16 South Park Has a Better Art Style
17 South Park Has No Annoying Bleeping Sound

Both South Park and Family Guy have that, but you can't blame the crew. You should blame Fox, Comedy Central, and the FCC for it.

18 South Park Has Better Character Designs
19 Family Guy Tries to Be Politically Correct Way Too Much
20 South Park is Original, Family Guy Isn't

True, it's way more original. South Park focuses on four boys in fourth grade who are foul-mouthed but have distinct personalities.

Stan is caring, kind, and brave, but also shy and sensitive, with a soft spot for animals.

Kyle is short-tempered, Jewish, intelligent, and athletic.

Cartman is mean, evil, and vicious but still somehow likable.

And Kenny is the knowledgeable sweetheart.

What's more original: a show about cussing fourth graders or a show about a dysfunctional family? Obviously, the show about cussing fourth graders is far more original.

Honestly, Family Guy wasn't original from the start, while South Park was.

21 South Park Does Satire the Right Way

That's so true! South Park is way funnier than Family Guy because, when South Park uses toilet humor, they actually make it funny. Family Guy, on the other hand, has a terrible sense of humor, with only a couple of scenes that made me laugh. There was literally a scene in Family Guy where Peter chases Meg around with farts. South Park scenes are far more entertaining because South Park understands how to make people laugh, and it almost never fails.

Family Guy relies on stereotypes for satire. South Park uses facts for satire.

22 South Park Was Made First
23 South Park Has Fewer Flashbacks
24 South Park HasĀ Better Songs
25 South Park Theme Song is Better Than Family Guy's

I know, right?! It's way catchier than Family Guy's stupid and lame theme song! I may hate country music, but South Park's country theme song is one of the only exceptions.

Who ever liked the Family Guy theme song?
