It helped boost its viewers & got fans connecting the real series with the fanmade Creepypasta video (which even made it into games). Now that the scene's deleted, the overall episode isn't popular anymore.
Plankton's suicide expression's the only reason this episode got so popular & it was without a doubt the worst episode in the history of the whole series. Whoever thought suicide should be mentioned in a family series the way it was? This goes to show you Nick doesn't care about the fans anymore.
