Top 10 Reasons Why Modern Mario Party Sucks

Mario party is one of my favorite franchises. It used to be amazing, however, the newer games suck. Here's a few reasons why. This is from Mario party 9 onward.
The Top Ten
1 The car gimmick

I guess I am going to be the only one who likes the car. It is not great but is still pretty interesting and is different not terrible. It is also good because now there are boss battles which are really fun. Since I am young I only have Mario Party DS, 9, Island Tour, 10, Star Rush, and top 100. From those I think the car being different from the ds Mario party is different. Something new and interesting in these new games by and Cube. Each one is different from each other making each one different and special. From collecting mini stars to racing to the end and playing as bowser as well as nonlinear boards that are grids each one is different from the rest. In the original Mario party games the only difference from 1-8 and ds was boards, characters, minigames, and story. You were still going around buying stars for coins. This is why I like the later games more.

What do you mean? The car thing wasn't so bad, though I do prefer traveling on my own. Unlocking cars, knowing where everyone is, and not having to wait for the screen to zone out and than go all the way across the map for a computer to roll was the successful points of this.

Honestly this thing is great for what it is. Maybe it's different, but it sure isn't bad. Just another type of gameplay after Mario Party 8 had nothing new to offer. It's not worse than the classic formula, nor is it better. It's just different.

Yes this is pretty irritating, I don't know anyone who likes it, lets go back to the old days where everyone was independent and don't all ride around in gay as hell cars

2 All luck, no skill

Mario Party Star Rush has no luck whatsoever. It is not like: oh you rolled a 3. Guess what is 3 spaces in front of you, a lose 2 stars hex. You go from 1st to 4th on the last round. In Mario Party Star Rush there are no bad spaces, you are going to win by winning the most minigames.

I always hated luck based minigames. I mean, one or two are okay but about half (maybe more) of the minigames are LUCK. I'd rather lose at skill games, also you could be in first place then a row of luck minigames make you flow down to 4th. That's not balance, it's annoyance.

The luck minigames absolutely SUCK. So hard to win, and when you lose, you either lose half your stars as in Mario Party 9 or something that gets you down to 4th place. Oof. >-<

Luck isn't always bad! I remember this time I played Mario Party 10 and I was fourth place all time, then at the end I came first place thanks to a battle minigame for half of everyones mini-stars.

3 No true story mode

Mario Party 9 at least had this but none of the other modern games have this which gives no real purpose to play the game. Oh look a bunch of random minigames or a bunch of extra modes that nobody cares about

I don't really agree with this reason. Island Tour has the Bowser Tower, and the original Mario parties didn't really have a whole heck of a lot of story packed into them either.

Story mode never affected the overall gameplay tbh. And 9 and Island Tour did in fact have story modes. Most of the older games had lame story modes excluding DS, and the first two games didn't even have any.

Mario Party 4 and 5 are the only games with real story modes. In 4, the hosts give you birthday presents for comlleting maps, but at the end, Bowser ruins the party. In 5, Bpwser plans to ruin everyone's dreams.

4 Less frequent minigames

Honestly the mini games were the best thing about the originals. They were competitive and they made Mario Party different from any other party game. And what happened? We only play about 3-4 mini games on average per game not including boss battles.Whereas in the older games they happened once per turn.

The talk about rare minigames is heavily exaggerated. They're not AS frequent as in the original, but they still happen often because half of the time when landing on the most common (blue) space, a minigame will happen. It's not always just on VS spaces.

I thought this was what Mario Party was all about? I'm so happy when there's a minigame, and I think Nintendo has finally found a good balance on how often we play a game.

Mario party 9 actually had a lot more mini games than I though. About half of the time I land on a space a minigame box appears. Although in Mario Party 10, mini games usually occur every 2 rotations, and most of the mini games in Mario Party 10 aren’t even fun.

5 Certain characters from past games being removed

The old Mario Parties removed DK and 10 brang it back though. Also the Mario Party rosters are not that big, if they won't cut off any characters every game would get the same characters, my only complaint are the lack of Birdo and Boo in few of the new games.

They removed Dry Bones who was my favorite character in the series! Good thing they brought him back in the switch game Super Mario Party.

The only somewhat fine reason on the list but even then they have better rosters overall so it doesn't mean much.

6 Boards are linear

You wonder why everyone hates the car gimmick this is why. Mario Party is supposed to be about taking risks and finding the best path to get to the star before your foes. 9/10 it’s just like get from point A to point B with few if any split paths and only an occasional board event

Mario Party 9 literally was just mainly a board where we had to go a certain direction. It was the same thing over and over again that made me hate the boards.

That's a good thing, it feels more like an adventure, the begining path, medium path, mid-boss, hard path, harder path and at last stage boss, it's more like an adventure.

Yes, I loathe this. You sit in a car and go on a linear path to the end. Boring.

7 Everyone going at the same time

Everyone going at the same time gives a new kind of strategy though, as you can use certain dice blocks to avoid certain spaces or to make it guaranteed a rival drive into Mini-Ztars. It's risky but it also makes it interesting at all times. So this isn't a good reason really (ties with #5)

It not the same when everyone goes at the same time, at least it not like that in super mario party,

That kinda defeats the purpose of Mario Party. I’d rather wait than do it all at once

8 No items

Lots of these reasons are invalid seeing as Mario Party Star Rush contains many things from old Mario Party.

Irrelevant you gain 4 special dice (5 in mario party 9) from taod houses or suprise boxes or a slow dice for cmoning in last on the home stretch

The only items are special dice. Yay

Which games are you talking about?

9 Bowser is nicer

In Star Rush he had to be nicer though, because you can select every space you land on and it wouldn't make sense though choose a Bowser space on purpose.

In the old game he would charge 20-50 coins, take a star or Bowser revolution

So? We finally get to play as Bowser, what's so bad about that?

He's actually more ruthless because mini-stars are the only currency in the games and losing half of them is worse than losing a star, seeing as it's easier to win them

10 Boring board gimmicks

*Mario Party: Island Tour has entered the chat*

Most are avoidable all together

The Contenders
11 Minigames require no effort

Yes they do, a lot of them in fact. Sure there are more luck-based ones this time around, but most are still skill-based.

I agree but this is invalid since the older games also had the coin Minigames

Neither did some of the older ones.

12 Boring minigames

While they are a few good mini games a lot of the modern mini games just seem like very lazy uncreative or recycled versions of previous Mario Party's.

I beg to differ honestly. 9 and 10 had really solid minigames with fun gimmicks. Island Tour and Star Rush I can give a pass on this item, but not 9 at all

A few mini games are okay but a majority of them are minimal effort and luck based

The minigames are NOT boring! Why would you even say that?!

13 No 2 vs 2 Minigames, 1vs 3 minigames or battle mini games

Half-right, half-wrong. It sucks that 9 doesn't have the former, and the handheld titles have neither, and that battle minigames are just standard minigames, but 10 had both.

9 has 1vs3 and battle minigames
10 has 2 vs 2 minigames

14 No chance time

Because it's luck-based enough. And not gonna lie, chance time was more of a problem in the older games because those games were already built more on skill, whereas the newer titles are more balanced in luck.

So when the luck-based Chance Time appears in old mario party, it's aweomsne, but the luck-base in the modern mario parties are automatically bad? I don't see the logic sadly

Chance Time ruined the old games. No offense, but this completely destroyed any chance of winning first place, at least for me.

15 No coins

Who cares if it's coins or mini-stars, it's not that big of a deal, that's like saying Mario Kart 8 sucks because it removed some items.

Coins? I also hated coins because they could easily be taken away, all based on luck minigames and such.

Mini Stars are more beautiful, Cons have been for a half century so it's nice to have a change.

Well, the mini stars are spritual successors of coins, but coins return to Super Mario Party!

16 No stars

It a bit different on mario party island tour without stars

I hated stars to be honest.

True except in Star Rush.

17 There are fewer characters
18 Toadette got removed from Mario Party 9
19 Weak roster

Mario Party Star Rush had the bigger roster in the series if you count the exclusive modes characters, Mario Party Star Rush doesn't fit with more than half of this list, this shows that it's seriously an underrated game.

This item proves the bandwagon. Outside of 8, the modern mario parties all have a superior roster to the older games (not including TT100). Star Rush has 12 playable characters, Mario Party Island Tour Bowser Jr., Mario Party 9 had Shy Guy, Koopa Troopa and Kamek, and so on.

What do you mean? The Mario games have the best rosters I have ever seen in my life.

Taking out classic characters for garbage like Rosalina.

20 The voices and prissy dresses of Princess Peach and Princess Daisy

Even to this day (from the mid-2010s to the late 2010s), The Ultimate Daredevil (which is me, Kieran Glen Harris Stark who thinks darthvadern is a troller because of his treatment towards this list and the fact that he loves Illumination Entertainment's Minions and the Hotel Transylvania films over the How to Train Your Dragon films according to a list he made) still feels as if this reason would make this list extra agreeable.

If you don't hate the voices nor the dresses of Princess Peach and/or Princess Daisy, then power to you. I was thinking of putting Princess Daisy dress off this list since (even though she is a girly girl and a tomboy at the same time,) she isn't really prissy.

Whoever put this on the list is extremely stupid and is probably a Wario fan. Their outfits and dresses doesn't influence gameplay in any way so shut up.

I dislike Mario Party 9 & 10 but this reason makes no sense

Wow, this is irrelevant to game feats.

21 Toads

What does this have to do with why it sucks?
