Saddest Anime Series

Anime series have been divided into several categories - comedic, romantic, mystery, science-fiction ... but what has caught my attention are tragedies, or animes not necessarily tragedies but emotional ones that have caused people's eyes to water.

The saddest anime series should be dependent on the content of the anime, the character backgrounds and just anything that has made them such emotional masterpieces sending people to tears.

41 Sora no Otoshimono SS3
42 Black Butler Black Butler Black Butler is a Japanese anime television series produced by A-1 Pictures and premiered in October, 2008.

Madam Red's cinematic record had me with tears in my eyes and especially her acceptance afterward and a beautiful funeral thanks to Ciel. Ciel's death and especially more when Sebastian delivered all the letters and when it showed the date and everything had me very deeply affected. Alois Trancy had me impacted.

I loved this show so much, but it pulled at my heart strings. When Ciel died, I started bawling because it was so sad and beautiful...

I can't explain it it's just making me cry

43 Fruits Basket Fruits Basket

This and fairy Tail are the only anime to make me cry. Fruits Basket is so great with great characters and a creative plot. The Momiji part go to me! My feels just died in this anime. This anime also has the saddest opening ever. Why are anime like Magica Madoka and Deadman Wonderland, soul eater, and black butler on here? Those are way more action than sad. This anime is suppose to make you feel the feels.

Everyone's story is just so sad! Momiji's was sad for me only because I was adopted. It's just a beautiful series though.

This anime had to be one of the saddest of all. It was the first one I have ever watched and at the end I couldn't help it.. It was just so sad!

This anime was pretty depressing

44 Bleach Bleach

Definitely was one of the best anime series that I have ever watched, especially the movies, they always surprised me and most of them had feels at the end of them so in my opinion, I think this should be a little higher in the list.

A lot of the episodes were very sad, such as the story with Nozomi, and the fillers where kids in Soul Society meet unfortunate ends. Can't really explain it properly. All the others weren't all that emotionally racking, but it was those few I did see that counted.

45 One Piece One Piece One Piece is a manga franchise created by Eiichiro Oda. The manga has been adapted into an original video animation (OVA) produced by Production I.G in 1998, and an anime series produced by Toei Animation, which began broadcasting in Japan in 1999 and has aired 749 episodes to date.

Saddest show ever! I mean, it makes you so happy with how upbeat and funny it is, just to depress you the next moment. Every Straw Hat has about the most depressing past ever, and then it shows how happy they can be and how they got over it. And then stuff like "I want to live, " the Going Merry's final moment, and the Whitebeard War arc just to make you sadder. And THEN they're all happy again, like yeah, stuff happens but we got over it! It's an emotional roller coaster!

How this is below DBZ, Fairy Tail, Death Note, Mirai Nikki, Phantom, and dare I say even Clannad is beyond me. The feels are to many to count in this series but man the scene that really messed me up badly was the Going Merry funeral scene. I mean when a series can make you cry over a ship than you know this series is powerful.

I believe this show should be in top 10. The most saddest part is Ace Death. You get connected to the scene very well. I Stopped watching One piece for a month, I didn't get that feel to watch it after Ace death. I recommend everyone to Watch One piece. Not only Ace, almost all characters have a saddest moment in their life. Brook Stays all alone on a ship for years. And many more. I believe its best than DBZ, Death Note and all others mentioned.

Why in the world is one piece lies sooo backward in terms of piece is one of the emotional anime I have ever watch... every single story of op brings tears...but why...

One of my favourite animes of all time with amazing characters and with wonderful story. This anime has everything. I can't say it's the most tragic anime ever but everyone must see this wonderful anime! +it has wonderful ending that made me cry from happiness!

This is one of the most satisfyingly tragic anime's I've ever watched. The Sherlock of anime's. 'Tis a must see for all anime enthusiasts, it includes everything from prime detective work, to action and fighting, to romance.

The ending is just... I don't know what to say. Had me crying for hours.

Is the best anime ever

47 Shinsekai Yori

I thought that this was one of the most overlooked anime I've seen. I loved the story it was definitely emotional and gives you a lot to think about.

A beautiful anime that rips at your heartstrings, because no one is truly evil and yet everyone suffers.

It was really sad watching how your favourite characters dies...

48 InuYasha InuYasha InuYasha is a manga franchise created by Rumiko Takahashi. It was adapted into two anime television series produced by Sunrise. The first was broadcast for 167 episodes on Yomiuri TV in Japan from October 16, 2000 until September 13, 2004. The second series, called Inuyasha: The Final Act, began airing more.

Inuyasha isn't the most saddest Anime I have watched but I does have its heart felt moments. Inuyasha and his past love kikyo always thought they betrayed one another in their final meeting leading to her death and his slumber for 50 years. Come later to find out they were pitted against one another by someone else but she died thinking he betrayed her when their love was starting to look like a bright future.

The most tragic scene was when kagura dies. Man, one moment she gets her heart back and the next moment she fades away.

This anime is not near as sad as the other anime but the last episode was kind of sad

This one has so many feels that it's hard to classify but it is definitely sad.

49 Dangan Ronpa Dangan Ronpa

Dangan Ronpa is an extremely good anime (though it's very rushed) and it's easy to become attached to the characters, making everything 10x harder.

I very good anime, you can get attached to the whole story very easily and the characters, a very intriguing anime.

Despair enters your new tears when your favorite character dies.

50 Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni Kai

Found myself tearing up during the opening and then sobbing during the actual anime. Poor Rika. She has to suffer through traveling across the same world fragments over and over again. And of course the scene in the hospital where Shion sees Satoshi is just heartbreaking...

The ending was a happy one, I'll admit. However, seeing how Rika has changed psychologically makes it pretty bittersweet.

Almost everyone has their time to die.

This has got to be the saddest anime I've ever seen... on a whole there aren't many sad scenes but the ones near the end of this series, probably the last two arcs I'd say are heart wrenching. and -SPOILERS- and the scene where Rika manages to convince everyone that she really is really reliving the same month over gives you so much hope for a happy ending to the second last arc only for you to watch everyone die again... truly soul-crushing.

51 Soul Eater Soul Eater Soul Eater is an anime series directed by Takuya Igarashi and produced by Bones, Aniplex, Dentsu, Media Factory, and TV Tokyo, which adapts the Soul Eater manga written and illustrated by Atsushi Ohkubo.

It's good, but it's not sad. There are a few sad moments, but overall, it is not a sad anime.

Longest anime I ever finished but one of the VERY best id say!

This is a good anime but it is NOT sad

52 Assassination Classroom Assassination Classroom

The ending was the saddest thing ever but it was so beautifully constructed and it made me cry so hard. It was so tragic but hopeful at the same time and I just cannot get over this!

The anime is absolutely beautiful. We're always left with a mystery as to why our "antagonist," Koro Sensei, has decided to teach the class 3-E, up until Episode 16 of Season 2. From that point on, a darkness moves in place, one of sadness and inevitability. And when the ending strikes, I cried. Very few things have ever managed to do so. Congratulations to this anime for achieving it sought in that incredibly emotional ending.

The entire season 1 and up to episode 16 of season 2 contain full of comedy. The series can definitely give the viewers a fun time watching it. The feel train hits hard after that with a sad yet satisfying ending.

Why is this not higher? The last episode had me crying out. - Haterssuck

This made me so sad I just can't explain it. I don't want to spoil the story so I'm just going to tell you... Watch with tissues near you on the last episode! Even hearing the theme songs now makes me cry...

I am a pretty stoic person, but I cried for about thirty minutes non-stop in this.

This anime is DEVASTATING! I died for weeks because of this and why doesn't it have a season two

I cried for 1 week when I listen to the ending song. T^T

55 Little Busters

This anime is more emotional than sad, but every moments made my cry out of happiness or sadness. by the way second season was really hard to get by because the sadness progresses higher with each episode

I was gonna vote for Clannad After Story, as it is the saddest and my favourite, but I voted for this just because of Refrain. Like, come on guys! Little Busters! Refrain is tragic!

This anime is very emotional and depressing how they ended up telling their life stories :/

How is this so low should at least be in the 20 to 30 range

56 Monster Monster

Probably one of the most brilliant animes I have ever seen... but it just scarred me... a talented doctor pays a horrible price for doing his duty, because he thinks all lives are equal... but as the story unfolds; you see how the monster, Johan was created... & even when you start hating those who destroyed numerous lives for sake of experiments, you feel sorry to see their present state of affairs, how all of them end up repenting it for the rest of their pathetic lives & the sad endings which Johan has written for each of them... you start wondering who the real monster is; and the extent to which consequences of mistakes once made, can end up to.

Incredible, moving, the series will make you rethink life itself.

Monster is less sad than Pokemon?

57 Darker than Black Darker than Black Darker than Black, known in Japan as Darker than Black: The Black Contractor, is an anime television series created, directed and written by Tensai Okamura and animated by Bones. In 2007, the 26 episode anime named Darker Than Black: The Black Contractor aired with a huge commercial success. It was more.

A very good anime! Had great characters and a an awesome mysterious vibe. I would recommend this anime to anyone who likes strong male leads, and who loves action and mystery.

One of the best anime I have ever seen.

What! its one of the most slow anime I ever boring...i couldn't even sometimes understand the concept...who voted it?

58 Darker Than Black Season 2

LOVED THIS ANIME, it made me cry, it might not be as good as the first season but still it is at an exceptional standard, I have to say it would be very close to the top in my most saddest anime list.

I liked season 1 better...

59 Gundam Oo

Every Gundam series seems to play with the 'everyone can die' trope. However, to me, the deaths in 00 felt way more intense than in some other series. As I said to my friend: "An anime death breaks your heart, but Gundam 00 manages to rip your heart into tiny pieces, throw it on the ground, step on it and throw it away afterwards."
Not only the deaths make it sad, there are surprisingly much emotional conflicts between the characters, which gives the show a heavy feeling. It's totally worth watching if you don't try to avoid mecha anime.

It really is sad when SPOILER ALERT Yu's sister dies at school trying to protect herself. I loved her character. But one thing that people seemed to forget is when Yu goes in a depression for several days doing nothing. He's just broken...

I cried so much! I was heart-broken when Ayumi died. I was watching this anime while it was still airing so it wasn't until about 2 or 3 weeks that I found out that Ayumi got saved. And the ending wasn't sad or anything but I still ended up crying a lot.

It comes off as a cute school comedy but there are some heart stopping moments that happen as the series goes on. Especially related to the sister
