Top 10 Best Gintama Characters
Samurai, aliens, Shinsengumi, and one silver-haired sugar addict who can't be bothered to follow a single rule. Gintama isn't just a show. It's controlled chaos wrapped in slapstick comedy and surprise emotional gut punches. And at the heart of all the absurdity are the characters. They're ridiculous, unpredictable, sometimes terrifying, and somehow still deeply human.
You know the ones. The stoic swordsman who's allergic to anything resembling common sense. The teenage girl who could body slam a gorilla and ask for snacks right after. The revolutionary cross-dresser with a bomb or two up his sleeve. And of course, the mayonnaise-loving sadist who's one workplace grievance away from burning everything down.
This list is your chance to throw support behind the characters who made you spit your drink, cry in public, or pause mid-episode just to recover from the sheer absurdity.
-
Sakata Gintoki
He is such a legend. Watching him feels like watching myself starring in an anime.
On par with Guts for best character.
He is one of the best anime characters out there because he is not like everyone.
-
Katsura Koutarou
Funniest character in the series, no doubt.
The funniest dude in all of anime ever.
After all, the most memorable quote from the series will always be his: "Zura ja nai, Katsura da!"
-
Kagura
I liked Kagura from the get-go. She had a character design that stuck with me, and I wanted to sketch her as soon as I saw her. Her childish and sarcastic personality was entertaining, and her strength was riveting to witness.
I love her energy and open personality. She has never once been afraid of expressing herself, and it had almost always been very un-female protagonist-like behavior, which was frankly, a breath of fresh air. She is just a fun little ball of sunshine that I find myself laughing my ass off at or just wanting to so badly reach out and cuddle.
The best character of the series. Definitely one of the best female anime characters of all time.
-
Hijikata Toushirou
He's an angel. Even though he's a demon towards his subordinates and even Kondo, I felt like he has gone softer because of Gintoki. Hijikata is strong and independent, and he deserves to live a happy life with whoever he loves. I love every episode of him with Gintoki. I love his personality.
So this is what they mean by summoning Hijikata-san in Fate/Grand Order with mayo as his catalyst...
Strong, grumpy, handsome guy in a uniform who's a softy at heart. What's not to love?
-
Okita Sougo
He's so innocent and cute, yet so lethal in battle. He respects Kondo and his sister so much, yet always tries to beat Hijikata and Kagura. It's nice to see a boy who fights back if a girl hits him.
He is funny. A very cute face. A very sadistic one too. He can be serious sometimes.
Never a dull moment with Sougo around. My favorite Shinsengumi guy.
-
Elizabeth
Probably the most loyal and useful pet around.
-
Shimura Shinpachi
One of the most underrated characters both in universe and outside. I don't know why I end up rooting for people like him. He's basically a Krillin: weak, but does everything that he possibly can to help.
-
Kondou Isao
A very underestimated character. He was always funny but could also be epic, one of the best leaders out there and one of the best Gintama characters, a bit like Erwin in funny.
Underestimated character. Funny but could be more epic.
Gorilla is third to Gintoki and Hijikata for me!
-
Sadaharu
Well, I think he is the most reliable and adorable of the Yorozuya family.

The coolest guy in Gintama... a great teacher and a monster in strength, and he always keeps that smiling face.

Shimura Tae
-
Sarutobi Ayame
She's hilarious, and has a lot of potential in terms of character, but instead she's almost always portrayed doing her antics. Wish Sorachi would show her cooler side as well.
-
Hattori Zenzou
-
Tokugawa Shigeshige
-
Yagyuu Kyuubei
Tied favorite for me, but my other favorites are doing so well I gave her the vote. One of the more badass characters in my opinion, and she always brings about hilarious scenes. Interactions with Tojo are 10/10.
